Compare the2023 Genesis GV70 VS 2022 Volvo XC40

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GV70 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The XC40 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The GV70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The XC40 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the GV70 deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The GV70’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The XC40’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GV70. But it costs extra on the XC40.

Both the GV70 and the XC40 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The GV70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The XC40’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV70 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the XC40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 second among compact premium suvs in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The XC40 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 100 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 33rd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 101 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 30th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 13 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 113 more horsepower (300 vs. 187) and 90 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 221) than the XC40 T4’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GV70’s 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 52 more horsepower (300 vs. 248) and 53 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 258) than the XC40 T5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 127 more horsepower (375 vs. 248) and 133 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 258) than the XC40 T5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Both the GV70 and the XC40 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All GV70s have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. A disable switch costs extra on the XC40.

The GV70 has 3.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC40 (17.4 vs. 14.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The GV70’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XC40 doesn’t offer launch control.

For better stopping power the GV70’s brake rotors are larger than those on the XC40:

The GV70’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the XC40 are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC40 (255/40R21 vs. 245/45R20).

The GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC40’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV70 Sport Prestige offers optional 21-inch wheels. The XC40’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The GV70 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The GV70 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV70’s wheelbase is 6.8 inches longer than on the XC40 (113.2 inches vs. 106.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the GV70 is 1.8 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the XC40.

The GV70’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52.6% to 47.4%) than the XC40’s (57.9% to 42.1%). This gives the GV70 more stable handling and braking.

The GV70 Sport Prestige handles at .86 G’s, while the XC40 T5 R-Design AWD pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GV70 Sport Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the XC40 T5 R-Design AWD (26.4 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

The design of the Genesis GV70 amounts to more than styling. The GV70 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the XC40 (.34) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the GV70 get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the GV70 Advanced is quieter than the XC40 T5 R-Design AWD:

The GV70 has 6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC40 (104 vs. 98).

The GV70 has .6 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, 2.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear legroom and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the XC40.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the GV70’s rear seats recline. The XC40’s rear seats don’t recline.

The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XC40 with its rear seat up (28.9 vs. 20.4 cubic feet). The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XC40 with its rear seat folded (56.9 vs. 46.9 cubic feet).

The GV70’s cargo area is larger than the XC40’s in almost every dimension:

The engine in the GV70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC40. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The GV70 Select/Advanced/Sport/3.5T’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XC40 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GV70 has standard extendable sun visors. The XC40 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV70 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XC40 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the GV70 Select/Advanced/Sport/3.5T keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The XC40 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The GV70 Sport Prestige/3.5T has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the XC40.

The GV70 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the XC40.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis GV70 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the XC40.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport/3.5T has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC40 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The XC40 R-Design/Inscription’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 first among compact premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XC40 was rated second in its category.

Motor Trend selected the GV70 as their 2022 Sport Utility of the Year. The XC40 has never been chosen.
