The GV70’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Genesis GV70 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GV70 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The GV70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the GV70 deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The GV70’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Range Rover Evoque’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The GV70 Advanced/Sport has standard Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The GV70 has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the Range Rover Evoque’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the GV70 has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the Range Rover Evoque.

Both the GV70 and the Range Rover Evoque have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the GV70 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 81 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Range Rover Evoque has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The GV70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Range Rover Evoque’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV70 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Range Rover Evoque. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Range Rover Evoque ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GV70’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Range Rover Evoque’s (7 vs. 6 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV70 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Land Rover only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Range Rover Evoque.

There are over 54 percent more Genesis dealers than there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GV70’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 second among compact premium suvs in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The Range Rover Evoque isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 37 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 22nd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 129 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 32nd.

Engine

The GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 54 more horsepower (300 vs. 246) and 42 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 269) than the Range Rover Evoque’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GV70’s 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 4 more horsepower (300 vs. 296) and 16 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 295) than the Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic HST’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 79 more horsepower (375 vs. 296) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 295) than the Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic HST’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Genesis GV70 turbo 4 cyl. is faster than the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque 2.0:

Transmission

The GV70’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the GV70 3.5T’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Range Rover Evoque:

The GV70’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Range Rover Evoque are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Range Rover Evoque (255/40R21 vs. 245/45R21).

The GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Range Rover Evoque’s optional 45 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV70’s wheelbase is 7.7 inches longer than on the Range Rover Evoque (113.2 inches vs. 105.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the GV70 is .8 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Range Rover Evoque.

The GV70’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52.6% to 47.4%) than the Range Rover Evoque’s (58.6% to 41.4%). This gives the GV70 more stable handling and braking.

The GV70 Sport Prestige handles at .86 G’s, while the Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic HST pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GV70 Sport Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.1 seconds quicker than the Range Rover Evoque SE (26.4 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 28.5 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

Passenger Space

The GV70 has .7 inches more front headroom, 1.3 inches more front legroom, 2.5 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, 3.2 inches more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Range Rover Evoque.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the GV70’s rear seats recline. The Range Rover Evoque’s rear seats don’t recline.

The front step up height for the GV70 is 1.2 inches lower than the Range Rover Evoque (17.5” vs. 18.7”). The GV70’s rear step up height is 1.2 inches lower than the Range Rover Evoque’s (17.3” vs. 18.5”).

Cargo Capacity

The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Range Rover Evoque with its rear seat up (28.9 vs. 21.6 cubic feet). The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Range Rover Evoque with its rear seat folded (56.9 vs. 50.5 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the GV70’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the GV70. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the GV70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Range Rover Evoque. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The GV70’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Range Rover Evoque’s power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The GV70 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Consumer Reports rated the GV70’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the Range Rover Evoque’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GV70 has standard extendable sun visors. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV70 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The GV70 Sport Prestige/3.5T has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Range Rover Evoque.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport/3.5T has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Range Rover Evoque doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 first among compact premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Range Rover Evoque isn’t in the top three.

Motor Trend selected the GV70 as their 2022 Sport Utility of the Year. The Range Rover Evoque has never been chosen.
