Compare the2023 Genesis GV70VS 2023 Cadillac XT4

The GV70’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The XT4 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the GV70 and XT4 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The GV70 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The XT4’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The GV70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The XT4 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the GV70 deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The GV70’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The XT4’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GV70. But it costs extra on the XT4.

The GV70’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the XT4.

The GV70’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The XT4 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the GV70 and the XT4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the GV70 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 112 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The XT4 has not been fully tested, yet.

The GV70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The XT4’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV70 4 years and 30,000 miles longer than Cadillac covers the XT4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the XT4 ends after only 6 years or 70,000 miles.

The GV70’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the XT4’s (7 vs. 6 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV70 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the XT4.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GV70’s reliability 21 points higher than the XT4.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 second among compact premium suvs in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The XT4 isn’t in the top three.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 8th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 9th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 5 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

The GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 65 more horsepower (300 vs. 235) and 53 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 258) than the XT4’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 140 more horsepower (375 vs. 235) and 133 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 258) than the XT4’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Genesis GV70 is faster than the Cadillac XT4:

The GV70 has 1.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the XT4 FWD’s standard fuel tank (17.4 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The GV70 has 1.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the XT4 AWD’s standard fuel tank (17.4 vs. 16.3 gallons).

The GV70’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XT4 doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XT4 (255/40R21 vs. 245/45R20).

The GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XT4’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV70 Sport Prestige offers optional 21-inch wheels. The XT4’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV70’s wheelbase is 3.8 inches longer than on the XT4 (113.2 inches vs. 109.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the GV70 is 1.6 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the XT4.

The GV70’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52.6% to 47.4%) than the XT4’s (58.4% to 41.6%). This gives the GV70 more stable handling and braking.

The GV70 Sport Prestige handles at .82 G’s, while the XT4 Sport AWD pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GV70 Sport Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the XT4 Sport AWD (26.4 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the GV70 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the XT4 (7.3 vs. 6.7 inches), allowing the GV70 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the GV70 Advanced is quieter than the XT4 Sport AWD:

The GV70 has 2.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XT4 (104 vs. 101.3).

The GV70 has .2 inches more front headroom, 2.1 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom and 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the XT4.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the GV70’s rear seats recline. The XT4’s rear seats don’t recline.

The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XT4 with its rear seat up (28.9 vs. 22.5 cubic feet). The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XT4 with its rear seat folded (56.9 vs. 48.9 cubic feet).

The GV70’s cargo area is larger than the XT4’s in almost every dimension:

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the GV70’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The XT4 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The GV70’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the XT4’s (3500 vs. 2500 pounds).

The engine in the GV70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XT4. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The GV70’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The XT4’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

The GV70 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The XT4 doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The GV70’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The XT4 Luxury’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV70 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XT4 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis GV70 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the XT4.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport/3.5T has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XT4 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The XT4 Premium Luxury/Sport’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

The GV70 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the GV70 will retain 51.14% to 51.23% of its original price after five years, while the XT4 only retains 45.4% to 45.5%.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Genesis GV70, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Cadillac XT4 isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 first among compact premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XT4 isn’t in the top three.

The GV70 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2023. The XT4 has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue, and the XT4 has only been chosen.
