Compare the2023 Genesis GV70VS 2022 Audi Q5

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GV70 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The Q5 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Genesis GV70 has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Q5 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The GV70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Q5 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the GV70 deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The GV70’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Q5’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The GV70 Advanced/Sport has standard Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Q5 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The GV70’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Q5 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the GV70 and the Q5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The GV70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Q5’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV70 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Audi covers the Q5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Q5 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV70 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Q5.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the GV70 has larger alternators than the Q5:

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 second among compact premium suvs in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The Q5 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 83 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 31st, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 77 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 25th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 9 places higher in reliability than Audi.

The GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 39 more horsepower (300 vs. 261) and 38 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 273) than the Q5 45 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 13 more horsepower (375 vs. 362) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (391 vs. 369) than the Q5 55 TFSI e’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

The GV70 has 3.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Q5 Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (17.4 vs. 14.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis GV70, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the Q5.

The GV70 Sport Prestige’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Q5’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV70 Sport Prestige offers optional 21-inch wheels. The Q5’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV70’s wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer than on the Q5 (113.2 inches vs. 111 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the GV70 is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Q5.

The GV70 Sport Prestige handles at .86 G’s, while the Q5 45 TFSI Premium Plus pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GV70 Sport Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Q5 45 TFSI Prestige (26.4 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27.2 seconds @ .65 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the GV70’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the Q5 45 TFSI’s (37.7 feet vs. 38.7 feet). The GV70’s turning circle is 1.7 feet tighter than the Q5 55 TFSI e’s (37.7 feet vs. 39.4 feet).

The GV70 has .4 inches more front legroom, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Q5.

The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Q5 with its rear seat up (28.9 vs. 25.8 cubic feet). The GV70 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Q5 with its rear seat folded (56.9 vs. 54 cubic feet).

While the Q5 55 TFSI e can only tow 2000, any GV70 can tow a minimum of 3500 pounds.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the GV70 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Q5 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Consumer Reports rated the GV70’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the Q5’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

The GV70 Sport Prestige/3.5T has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Q5.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis GV70 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Q5.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport/3.5T has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Q5 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GV70 Advanced/Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Q5 Prestige’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GV70 first among compact premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Q5 isn’t in the top three.

Motor Trend selected the GV70 as their 2022 Sport Utility of the Year. The Q5 has never been chosen.
