Both the Palisade and Outlander have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Palisade has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Outlander’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Palisade and the Outlander have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The Palisade’s 7 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Outlander runs out after 100,000 miles.

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Palisade for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Mitsubishi doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Outlander.

There are almost 3 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are Mitsubishi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Palisade’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Palisade’s reliability 38 points higher than the Outlander.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Mitsubishi vehicles. With 41 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Hyundai higher than Mitsubishi.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Mitsubishi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 35 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mitsubishi is ranked 14th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Mitsubishi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 14 places higher in reliability than Mitsubishi.

The Palisade’s 3.8 DOHC V6 produces 110 more horsepower (291 vs. 181) and 81 lbs.-ft. more torque (262 vs. 181) than the Outlander’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Hyundai Palisade is faster than the Mitsubishi Outlander:

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Palisade’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip with its optional disable switch. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Palisade has 4.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander (18.8 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Palisade stops shorter than the Outlander:

For better traction, the Palisade has larger tires than the Outlander (245/60R18 vs. 235/60R18).

The Palisade has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Outlander; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Palisade offers an optional automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Outlander doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Palisade’s wheelbase is 7.7 inches longer than on the Outlander (114.2 inches vs. 106.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Palisade is 4.5 inches wider in the front and 4.5 inches wider in the rear than on the Outlander.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Palisade has standard flush composite headlights. The Outlander has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Palisade has standard seating for 8 passengers; the Outlander can only carry 7.

The Palisade has 29.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Outlander (155.3 vs. 125.5).

The Palisade has .1 inches more front headroom, 2.4 inches more front legroom, 4.1 inches more front hip room, 3.3 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom, 2.5 inches more rear legroom, 4.4 inches more rear hip room, 4.9 inches more rear shoulder room, 3.3 inches more third row headroom, 12.7 inches more third row legroom, 1.6 inches more third row hip room and 4 inches more third row shoulder room than the Outlander.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Palisade’s middle and third row seats recline. The Outlander’s middle and third row seats don’t recline.

The Palisade’s cargo area provides more volume than the Outlander.

Both the Palisade and the Outlander have standard second row automatic folding seats. The Palisade Limited/Calligraphy’s third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a button. The Outlander doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

The Palisade’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Outlander’s (5000 vs. 2000 pounds).

The Palisade’s standard front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Outlander’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically. The Palisade Calligraphy’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches.

Consumer Reports rated the Palisade’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Outlander’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

The Palisade’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Mitsubishi only offers heated mirrors on the Outlander SE/SEL.

The Palisade’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Outlander offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Palisade SEL/XRT/Limited/Calligraphy has standard heated front seats and second and third row heated seats also avaiable, which keep the driver and passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Mitsubishi doesn’t offer heated seats in the third row of the Outlander.

Optional air conditioned front and second row seats keep the Palisade’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Outlander doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Palisade Calligraphy has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Outlander.

The Palisade (except SE) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Outlander doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Palisade Calligraphy’s Remote Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Insurance will cost less for the Palisade owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Palisade will cost $495 to $6170 less than the Outlander over a five-year period.

The Palisade will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Palisade will retain 53.3% to 53.86% of its original price after five years, while the Outlander only retains 45.74% to 48.71%.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Hyundai Palisade, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Mitsubishi Outlander isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Palisade first among upper midsize suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Outlander isn’t in the top three.

The Hyundai Palisade outsold the Mitsubishi Outlander by almost two to one during the 2022 model year.
