The Acadia Denali’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Envision doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The Acadia has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Envision doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Both the Acadia and the Envision have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the GMC Acadia is safer than the Buick Envision:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the GMC Acadia is safer than the Buick Envision:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Acadia the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 205 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Envision has not been tested, yet.

Engine

The Acadia’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 82 more horsepower (310 vs. 228) and 13 lbs.-ft. more torque (271 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the Acadia 2.0 Turbo’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Envision doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Acadia FWD’s standard fuel tank has 3.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision FWD’s standard fuel tank (19.4 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Acadia AWD’s standard fuel tank has 5.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision AWD’s standard fuel tank (21.7 vs. 16.1 gallons).

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Acadia AT4’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Envision (255/65R17 vs. 245/45R20).

The GMC Acadia’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Buick Envision only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Acadia has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Envision doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The Acadia has variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Envision doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Acadia’s wheelbase is 3.1 inches longer than on the Envision (112.5 inches vs. 109.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Acadia is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than on the Envision.

Chassis

The front grille of the Acadia FWD 4 cyl. uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Envision doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Acadia offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Envision can only carry 5.

The Acadia has 43.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Envision (143.8 vs. 100.4).

The Acadia has .4 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom, .6 inches more front hip room, 2.7 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, .4 inches more rear legroom, 5.9 inches more rear hip room and 2.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the Envision.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Acadia’s middle row seats recline. The Envision’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Acadia’s cargo area provides more volume than the Envision.

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the Acadia’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Envision doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Buick Envision is limited to 1500 pounds. The Acadia offers up to a 4000 lbs. towing capacity.

Ergonomics

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Acadia’s available exterior PIN entry system. The Envision doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its OnStar® can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

The Acadia’s speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Envision’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Acadia has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Envision.

Economic Advantages

The Acadia will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Acadia will retain 44.46% to 48.31% of its original price after five years, while the Envision only retains 43.09% to 43.62%.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends both the GMC Acadia and the Buick Envision, based on reliability, safety and performance.

The GMC Acadia outsold the Buick Envision by 69% during the 2021 model year.
