To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the MC20’s optional rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The AMG SL doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the MC20 and the AMG SL have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras and available blind spot warning systems.

Engine

The MC20’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 152 more horsepower (621 vs. 469) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (538 vs. 516) than the AMG SL 55’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid. The MC20’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 44 more horsepower (621 vs. 577) than the AMG SL 63’s standard 4.0 turbo V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

The MC20 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The AMG SL doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the MC20 has larger rear tires than the AMG SL (305/30R20 vs. 295/35R20).

The MC20’s 245/35R20 front and 305/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the AMG SL’s standard 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the MC20’s turning circle is 3.4 feet tighter than the AMG SL’s (38.7 feet vs. 42.1 feet).

Ergonomics

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the MC20 detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The AMG SL doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The MC20’s standard GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that plots alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The AMG SL’s available navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

Model Availability

The Maserati MC20 comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Mercedes AMG SL isn’t available as a coupe.
