Compare the2022 Hyundai VelosterVS 2022 Ford Mustang

Both the Veloster and the Mustang have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

A significantly tougher test than their original offset frontal crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH small overlap frontal offset crash tests. In this test, where only 25% of the total width of the vehicle is struck, results indicate that the Hyundai Veloster is safer than the Mustang Fastback:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, rear impact and roof-crush tests, its standard front crash prevention system, its “Good” rating in the new passenger-side small overlap crash test, and its headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Veloster the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2019, a rating granted to only 164 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Mustang was not even a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2016.

The Veloster comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Mustang’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Veloster 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Ford covers the Mustang. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Mustang ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Veloster’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Mustang’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Veloster for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Ford doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Mustang.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Veloster’s reliability 41 points higher than the Mustang.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Ford vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai above average in initial quality. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ford is rated lower.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 40 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ford is ranked 16th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 16 places higher in reliability than Ford.

On the EPA test cycle the Veloster gets better mileage than the Mustang Fastback:

The Veloster offers an optional sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Mustang doesn’t offer an SMG.

For better stopping power the Veloster’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the Mustang:

The Veloster’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Mustang’s standard 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Veloster has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Mustang.

The Hyundai Veloster may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 700 pounds less than the Ford Mustang.

The Veloster is 1 foot, 8.6 inches shorter than the Mustang, making the Veloster easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Veloster N is quieter than the Mustang EcoBoost Premium Fastback:

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Veloster a Compact car, while the Mustang Fastback is rated a Subcompact.

The Veloster has 7.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Mustang Fastback (89.9 vs. 82.8).

The Veloster has .5 inches more front headroom, 1.1 inches more rear headroom, 5.1 inches more rear legroom and 2.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Mustang Fastback.

The Veloster has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the Mustang Fastback (19.9 vs. 13.5 cubic feet).

The Veloster’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Ford does not offer a locking feature on the Mustang’s standard power windows.

The Veloster has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Mustang doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Veloster has a standard rear wiper. The Mustang doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Veloster’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Ford only offers heated mirrors on the Mustang Premium/Mach 1.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Veloster is less expensive to operate than the Mustang because typical repairs cost much less on the Veloster than the Mustang, including $535 less for a muffler, $59 less for front brake pads, $39 less for fuel injection, $470 less for a timing belt/chain and $696 less for a power steering pump.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its January 2019 issue and they ranked the Hyundai Veloster N higher than the Ford Mustang GT Premium Convertible.

The Veloster N was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2019. The Mustang has never been an “All Star.”
