Both the Range Rover Sport and GLS have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The GLS’ child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GLS.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the GLS have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Range Rover Sport’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the GLS’ (6 vs. 5 years).

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Range Rover Sport’s reliability 20 points higher than the GLS.

The Range Rover Sport P400’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 33 more horsepower (395 vs. 362) and 36 lbs.-ft. more torque (405 vs. 369) than the GLS’ 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 156 more horsepower (518 vs. 362) and 92 lbs.-ft. more torque (461 vs. 369) than the GLS’ 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid. The Range Rover Sport SVR’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 213 more horsepower (575 vs. 362) and 147 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 369) than the GLS’ 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard full size spare (not available on 7-Passenger/P400e) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the GLS; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The Range Rover Sport V8 has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The GLS doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Range Rover Sport SVR handles at .89 G’s, while the GLS 450 pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Range Rover Sport SVR executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the GLS 450 (25.2 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 26.4 seconds @ .7 average G’s).

The Range Rover Sport is 1 foot shorter than the GLS, making the Range Rover Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Range Rover Sport has .1 inches more front headroom, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the GLS.

Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) is standard on the Range Rover Sport, using the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the GLS.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GLS only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Sport has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The GLS doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Insurance will cost less for the Range Rover Sport owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Range Rover Sport will cost $3025 less than the GLS over a five-year period.

The Range Rover Sport will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Range Rover Sport will retain 47.31% to 49.21% of its original price after five years, while the GLS only retains 41.19% to 46.13%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Range Rover Sport is less expensive to operate than the GLS because typical repairs cost much less on the Range Rover Sport than the GLS, including $442 less for a water pump, $331 less for a muffler, $72 less for front brake pads, $28 less for a starter, $72 less for front struts and $1134 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Land Rover Range Rover Sport will be $10578 to $37272 less than for the Mercedes GLS.

The Range Rover Sport was selected by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine as their 2014 4x4 of the Year. The GLS has never been chosen.
