Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Sprinter Cargo Van offers optional Rear Cross Traffic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Sprinter Cargo Van offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Sprinter Cargo Van has standard Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Sprinter Cargo Van and the ProMaster Cargo Van have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The Sprinter Cargo Van comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire van. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

Mercedes’ powertrain warranty covers the Sprinter Cargo Van 40,000 miles longer than Ram covers the ProMaster Cargo Van. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the ProMaster Cargo Van ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Sprinter Cargo Van has a standard 250-amp alternator. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s standard 180-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Sprinter Cargo Van has a 850-amp battery. The ProMaster Cargo Van only offers a standard 800-amp battery.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Ram With 71 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Mercedes higher than Ram.

Engine

The Sprinter Cargo Van’s optional 2.0 turbo diesel produces 6 lbs.-ft. more torque (266 vs. 260) than the ProMaster Cargo Van’s 3.6 DOHC V6. The Sprinter Cargo Van’s optional 3.0 turbo V6 diesel produces 65 lbs.-ft. more torque (325 vs. 260) than the ProMaster Cargo Van’s 3.6 DOHC V6.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Sprinter Cargo Van 3500/4500’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the ProMaster Cargo Van (285/65R16 vs. 225/75R16).

The Sprinter Cargo Van 3500/4500’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 65 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the ProMaster Cargo Van’s 75 series tires.

The Mercedes Sprinter Cargo Van’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Ram ProMaster Cargo Van only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling

The Sprinter Cargo Van has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Sprinter Cargo Van flat and controlled during cornering. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sprinter Cargo Van’s wheelbase is longer than on the ProMaster Cargo Van:

Cargo Capacity

The Sprinter Cargo Van 1500 144” WB has a much larger cargo volume than the ProMaster 1500 SWB (319 vs. 259 cubic feet).

The Sprinter Cargo Van 2500 170” WB High Roof has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the ProMaster 1500 MWB (370.8 vs. 304 cubic feet).

The Sprinter Cargo Van 2500 170” EXT WB High Roof has a much larger cargo volume than the ProMaster 2500 LWB (532.6 vs. 420 cubic feet).

Payload and Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Ram ProMaster Cargo Van is limited to 6910 pounds. The Sprinter Cargo Van 3500 offers up to a 7500 lbs. towing capacity.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Sprinter Cargo Van is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the ProMaster Cargo Van. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The Sprinter Cargo Van’s standard tilting steering column adjusts to different sized drivers and makes entering and exiting easier. Ram doesn’t offer tilt steering on the ProMaster Cargo Van.

When three different drivers share the Sprinter Cargo Van, the optional memory seats make it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver and front passenger’s seat positions. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer memory seats.

The Sprinter Cargo Van’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s power windows’ switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Sprinter Cargo Van the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the ProMaster Cargo Van can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Sprinter Cargo Van has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Sprinter Cargo Van offers an optional rear wiper. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Sprinter Cargo Van has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The ProMaster Cargo Van only offers an automatic headlight on/off feature as an extra cost option.

The Sprinter Cargo Van has standard power remote mirrors. The ProMaster Cargo Van only comes with remote mirrors at extra cost. Without them the driver will have to roll down the windows and reach across the car to adjust the mirrors.

The Sprinter Cargo Van’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Ram charges extra for heated mirrors on the ProMaster Cargo Van.

The Sprinter Cargo Van’s optional automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

A built-in pollen filter removes pollen, exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the Sprinter Cargo Van’s passenger compartment. This helps prevent lung and/or sinus irritation that can trigger allergies or asthma. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s air conditioner doesn’t offer a filtration system.
