The Metris Passenger’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Odyssey doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Metris Passenger and the Odyssey have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, collision warning systems, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear parking sensors.

A hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs, drives the camshafts in the Metris Passenger’s engine. A rubber cam drive belt that needs periodic replacement drives the Odyssey’s camshafts. If the Odyssey’s belt breaks, the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Metris Passenger has a standard 190-amp alternator. The Odyssey’s 150-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the Metris Passenger is under the seat, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Metris Passenger’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Odyssey’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Honda With 35 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Mercedes higher than Honda.

Regenerative brakes improve the Metris Passenger’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Odyssey doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes Metris Passenger higher (6 out of 10) than the Honda Odyssey (5). This means the Metris Passenger produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Odyssey every 15,000 miles.

The Metris Passenger’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Odyssey’s standard 60 series tires.

The Metris Passenger’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Odyssey doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Metris Passenger’s wheelbase is 7.9 inches longer than on the Odyssey (126 inches vs. 118.1 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Metris Passenger’s turning circle is 3.2 feet tighter than the Odyssey’s (36.4 feet vs. 39.6 feet).

The Metris Passenger has .3 inches more front hip room, 1.9 inches more rear headroom, .7 inches more rear hip room, 3.3 inches more rear shoulder room, 2.2 inches more third row headroom, 7.6 inches more third row hip room and 1.2 inches more third row shoulder room than the Odyssey.

The Metris Passenger’s cargo area provides more volume than the Odyssey.

The Metris Passenger’s optional rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the double swing out door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Odyssey’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The Metris Passenger’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Odyssey’s (5000 vs. 3500 pounds).

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the Metris Passenger uses the Electronic Stability Program sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Odyssey doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The engine in the Metris Passenger is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Odyssey. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Metris Passenger to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Odyssey doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The Metris Passenger has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Odyssey has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the EX/EX-L/Touring/Elite.

The Metris Passenger’s optional Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Odyssey doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
