The Metris Cargo offers optional Active Brake Assist, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Metris Cargo’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The Metris Cargo has standard Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Metris Cargo and the ProMaster City Tradesman have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available blind spot warning systems.

The Mercedes Metris Cargo weighs 623 to 678 pounds more than the Ram ProMaster City Tradesman. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Metris Cargo has a standard 175-amp alternator (190-amp - Metris Cargo optional). The ProMaster City Tradesman’s 160-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Metris Cargo has a standard 850-amp battery. The ProMaster City Tradesman’s 700-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the Metris Cargo is under the seat, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Metris Cargo’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The ProMaster City Tradesman’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Ram With 71 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Mercedes higher than Ram.

The Metris Cargo’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 30 more horsepower (208 vs. 178) and 84 lbs.-ft. more torque (258 vs. 174) than the ProMaster City Tradesman’s 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder.

Regenerative brakes improve the Metris Cargo’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Metris Cargo has 2.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the ProMaster City Tradesman (18.5 vs. 16 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For more complete vehicle control the Metris Cargo has a manually controlled automatic, with the available convenience of an automatic transmission and the complete gear control of a manual transmission without the inconvenience of a clutch. The Mercedes Metris Cargo has standard four-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power and improved directional control in poor weather. Only rear drums come on the ProMaster City Tradesman. Drums can heat up and make stops longer, especially with antilock brakes that work much harder than conventional brakes.

For better traction, the Metris Cargo has larger tires than the ProMaster City Tradesman (235/55R17 vs. 215/55R16).

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Metris Cargo offers optional 17-inch wheels. The ProMaster City Tradesman’s largest wheels are only 16-inches.

The Metris Cargo’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Metris Cargo Standard WB’s wheelbase is 3.6 inches longer than on the ProMaster City Tradesman (126 inches vs. 122.4 inches). The Metris Cargo’s available liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The ProMaster City Tradesman’s two swing out doors impair rear visibility, need a lot of clearance, and can block loading in tight quarters.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Metris Cargo offers an optional power cargo door, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer a power cargo door.

The Metris Cargo’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the ProMaster City Tradesman’s (5000 vs. 2000 pounds).

If the front windows are left open on the Metris Cargo the driver can close them from a distance using the remote (remote must be aimed at door sensor). On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the ProMaster City Tradesman can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Metris Cargo has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Metris Cargo’s standard variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The ProMaster City Tradesman’s fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent. The Metris Cargo has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer automatic headlights.

The Metris Cargo’s optional dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Metris Cargo offers an optional Active Distance Assist Distronic, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

The Metris Cargo’s optional Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The ProMaster City Tradesman doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
