The Metris Cargo has standard Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Metris Cargo and the ProMaster Cargo Van have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, collision warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Metris Cargo has a 850-amp battery. The ProMaster Cargo Van only offers a standard 800-amp battery.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Ram With 71 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Mercedes higher than Ram.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the Metris Cargo’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Metris Cargo has larger tires than the ProMaster Cargo Van (235/55R17 vs. 225/75R16).

The Metris Cargo’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the ProMaster Cargo Van’s standard 75 series tires. The Metris Cargo’s optional tires have a lower 55 series profile than the ProMaster Cargo Van’s 75 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Metris Cargo offers optional 17-inch wheels. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s largest wheels are only 16-inches.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Mercedes Metris Cargo has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Ram ProMaster Cargo Van has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The front and rear suspension of the Metris Cargo uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the ProMaster Cargo Van, which uses leaf springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Metris Cargo Standard WB’s wheelbase is 8 inches longer than on the ProMaster 1500 SWB (126 inches vs. 118 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Metris Cargo Long WB’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the ProMaster 1500 MWB’s (38.7 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

Chassis

The Mercedes Metris Cargo may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 850 pounds less than the Ram ProMaster Cargo Van.

The Metris Cargo is 5.4 inches narrower than the ProMaster Cargo Van, making the Metris Cargo easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The Metris Cargo is 16.5 inches shorter in height than the ProMaster Cargo Van, making the Metris Cargo much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Cargo Capacity

The Metris Cargo’s available liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s two swing out doors impair rear visibility, need a lot of clearance, and can block loading in tight quarters.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Metris Cargo offers an optional power cargo door, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a power cargo door.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Metris Cargo is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the ProMaster Cargo Van. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The Metris Cargo’s standard tilting steering column adjusts to different sized drivers and makes entering and exiting easier. Ram doesn’t offer tilt steering on the ProMaster Cargo Van.

The Metris Cargo’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s power windows’ switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the front windows are left open on the Metris Cargo the driver can close them from a distance using the remote (remote must be aimed at door sensor). On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the ProMaster Cargo Van can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Metris Cargo has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Metris Cargo to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Metris Cargo offers an optional rear wiper. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Metris Cargo has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The ProMaster Cargo Van only offers an automatic headlight on/off feature as an extra cost option.

The Metris Cargo’s optional dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

The Metris Cargo’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

A built-in pollen filter removes pollen, exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the Metris Cargo’s passenger compartment. This helps prevent lung and/or sinus irritation that can trigger allergies or asthma. The ProMaster Cargo Van’s air conditioner doesn’t offer a filtration system.

The Metris Cargo’s optional Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The ProMaster Cargo Van doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
