Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Durango 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Range Rover Sport. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Range Rover Sport ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 12 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Durango’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 61 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 26th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge above average in long-term dependability. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Land Rover is rated below average.

On the EPA test cycle the Durango gets better mileage than the Range Rover Sport:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Durango V8’s fuel efficiency. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Both the Durango V6 and the Range Rover Sport have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. All Durango V6s have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The Range Rover Sport P360/P400 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Dodge Durango uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 5.7 V8 engine for maximum performance). The Range Rover Sport requires premium, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Durango can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Range Rover Sport doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

All Durango’s offer an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. The Durango V8 4WD can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Durango can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Range Rover Sport can’t be towed flat on the ground.

The Durango’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Range Rover Sport does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Durango will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Durango will retain 51.01% to 53.92% of its original price after five years, while the Range Rover Sport only retains 47.31% to 49.21%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Durango is less expensive to operate than the Range Rover Sport because it costs $364 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Durango than the Range Rover Sport, including $78 less for a water pump, $21 less for front brake pads, $199 less for a starter, $431 less for fuel injection, $119 less for a fuel pump and $370 less for a timing belt/chain.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Dodge Durango will be $36622 to $72456 less than for the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.
