J.D. Power ranks Jeep 19th in reliability. With 55 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 30th.

The Cherokee’s optional 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 83 more horsepower (270 vs. 187) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 221) than the XC40 T4’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Cherokee’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 22 more horsepower (270 vs. 248) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the XC40 T5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Cherokee’s standard 3.2 DOHC V6 produces 23 more horsepower (271 vs. 248) than the XC40 T5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Both the Cherokee and the XC40 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. All Cherokees have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. A disable switch costs extra on the XC40.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Cherokee uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The XC40 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Cherokee has 1.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC40 (15.9 vs. 14.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.
