To maximize occupant safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Ford Shelby GT500 have pretensioners to eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Toyota Supra doesn’t offer pretensioners.

Both the Shelby GT500 and the Supra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The Ford Shelby GT500 weighs 681 to 1002 pounds more than the Toyota Supra. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

In a Car and Driver race course test, the Ford Shelby GT500 was clocked 14.7 seconds faster than the Toyota Supra 3.0 (164.6 sec. vs. 179.3 sec.).

The Shelby GT500 has 2.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Supra (16 vs. 13.7 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Shelby GT500 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Supra doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The Shelby GT500 offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The Supra doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Shelby GT500 has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Supra 2.0. The Supra’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Shelby GT500 keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Supra doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Shelby GT500 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Shelby GT500 will retain 63.08% of its original price after five years, while the Supra only retains 52.52% to 53.44%.
