Compare the2022 Audi e-tron GTVS 2022 Volvo S90

The Audi e-tron GT has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The S90 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The e-tron GT offers optional Maneuver Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The S90 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the e-tron GT and the S90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 20th in reliability. With 16 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 25th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Audi 4 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The e-tron GT’s standard electric motors produces 206 more horsepower (522 vs. 316) and 177 lbs.-ft. more torque (472 vs. 295) than the S90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid. The e-tron GT’s electric motors produces 122 more horsepower (522 vs. 400) than the S90 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid. The RS e-tron GT’s standard electric motors produces 237 more horsepower (637 vs. 400) and 140 lbs.-ft. more torque (612 vs. 472) than the S90 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Audi e-tron GT (base engine) is faster than the S90 B6 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder:

The e-tron GT’s maximum EPA estimated driving range is 238 miles on a full charge. The S90 T8 can only travel about 21 miles before it has to start its internal combustion engine.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Audi e-tron GT higher (10 out of 10) than the Volvo S90 (7). This means the e-tron GT produces up to 11.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the S90 every 15,000 miles.

The e-tron GT’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The S90 doesn’t offer launch control.

For better stopping power the e-tron GT’s brake rotors are larger than those on the S90:

The e-tron GT RS offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The S90 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The e-tron GT stops shorter than the S90:

For better traction, the e-tron GT Prestige/RS’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the S90 (F:265/35R21 & R:305/30R21 vs. 255/35R20).

The e-tron GT’s standard 285/40R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S90’s standard 45 series tires. The e-tron GT Prestige/RS’ optional 305/30R21 rear tires have a lower 30 series profile than the S90’s optional 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the e-tron GT has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the S90. The e-tron GT Prestige/RS’ optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the S90.

The front and rear suspension of the e-tron GT uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the S90, which uses coil springs in front and transverse leafs springs in the rear. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The e-tron GT has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The e-tron GT’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The S90 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the e-tron GT is 3.4 inches wider in the front and 2.8 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the S90.

The RS e-tron GT handles at .95 G’s, while the S90 T6 Inscription pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The RS e-tron GT executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.2 seconds quicker than the S90 T6 Inscription (24.1 seconds @ .85 average G’s vs. 26.3 seconds @ .68 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the e-tron GT’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the S90 18” wheels’ (38.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet). The e-tron GT’s turning circle is 1.9 feet tighter than the S90 19” wheels’ (38.1 feet vs. 40 feet).

The e-tron GT is 3.7 inches shorter than the S90, making the e-tron GT easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Audi e-tron GT amounts to more than styling. The e-tron GT has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .24 Cd. That is significantly lower than the S90 (.28 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the e-tron GT get better fuel mileage.

The e-tron GT’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The S90 Luxury Package doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

A Service Interval Display is standard on the e-tron GT to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for vehicle inspection based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Volvo doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the S90.

The e-tron GT’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the e-tron GT has standard extendable sun visors. The S90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Audi e-tron GT has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the S90 T6 offers wireless charging.

The e-tron GT Prestige/RS’ Park Steering Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Optional Remote Controlled Parking will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The S90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Audi e-tron outsold the Volvo 90 Series by almost six to one during the 2021 model year.
