Safety

Full-time four-wheel drive is standard on the Titan XD. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Tundra. Four-wheel drive of any type costs extra on the Tundra.

The Titan XD has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Tundra’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Titan XD has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the Tundra and isn't available on the not available.

The Titan XD’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Tundra doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Titan XD and the Tundra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available daytime running lights and around view monitors.

Warranty

The Titan XD comes with a full 5-year/100,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Tundra’s 3-year basic warranty expires 2 years or 64000 miles sooner.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Titan XD third among large light duty pickups in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Tundra isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 11 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked 13th.

Engine

The Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 52 more horsepower (400 vs. 348) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (413 vs. 405) than the Tundra SR’s standard 3.4 turbo V6. The Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8 produces 11 more horsepower (400 vs. 389) than the Tundra’s optional 3.4 turbo V6.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Nissan Titan XD uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The Tundra requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Titan XD has 3.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tundra’s standard fuel tank (26 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Titan XD’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Tundra:

Passenger Space

The Titan XD has standard seating for 6 passengers; the Tundra can only carry 5.

Ergonomics

The Titan XD (except S/SV) offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Tundra doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Titan XD’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Tundra’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.
