Compare the2022 McLaren 720SVS 2022 Porsche 911

The McLaren 720S has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The 911 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the 720S and the 911 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

The 720S comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The 911’s 50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 331 more horsepower (710 vs. 379) and 237 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 331) than the 911’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 267 more horsepower (710 vs. 443) and 178 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 390) than the 911 S’ standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 237 more horsepower (710 vs. 473) and 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 420) than the 911 GTS’ standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 70 more horsepower (710 vs. 640) than the 911 Turbo S’ standard 3.7 turbo 6-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the 720S gets better mileage than the 911 Coupe:

The 720S has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the 911’s standard fuel tank (19 vs. 16.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The 720S has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The 911 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better stopping power the 720S’ standard brake rotors are larger than those on the 911:

The 720S has standard air brakes, which adjust the rear spoiler automatically during high-speed braking in order to shorten stopping distances. The 911 doesn’t offer air brakes.

The 720S stops much shorter than the 911:

For better traction, the 720S has larger tires than the 911 (F:245/35R19 & R:305/30R20 vs. F:235/40R19 & R:295/35R20).

The 720S’ 245/35R19 front and 305/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 911’s standard 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

The 720S offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The 911 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 720S’ wheelbase is 8.6 inches longer than on the 911 (105.1 inches vs. 96.5 inches). The 720S’ wheelbase is 8.4 inches longer than on the 911 GT3 (105.1 inches vs. 96.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the 720S is 3.3 inches wider in the front and 2.5 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 911.

The 720S’ front to rear weight distribution is more even (42% to 58%) than the 911’s (39.5% to 60.5%). This gives the 720S more stable handling and braking.

The 720S Coupe handles at 1.10 G’s, while the 911 S Coupe pulls only 1.06 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The 720S Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the 911 S Coupe (22.3 seconds @ 1.05 average G’s vs. 23.3 seconds @ .86 average G’s).

The 720S’ standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The 911 doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the 720S Coupe is quieter than the 911 Turbo S Coupe (95 vs. 99 dB).

The 720S Coupe has a much larger trunk than the 911 Coupe with its rear seat up (12.7 vs. 4.6 cubic feet).

The 720S Spider has a much larger trunk with its top down than the 911 Cabriolet with its top down (7.3 vs. 4.6 cubic feet).

With its coupe body style and remote trunk release lockout, the 720S offers cargo security. The 911’s non-lockable folding seat defeats cargo security.

The 720S offers an optional under hood light to help in making nighttime maintenance checks, adding fluids, etc. The 911 doesn’t offer an under hood light.

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional in the 911, the 720S offers an optional driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

If the windows are left open on the 720S the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the 911 can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In case of a sudden change of weather, the 720S has a standard remote convertible top that can be raised from a distance to protect the interior of the vehicle from damage. On a hot day the 720S has a standard remote opening feature, to lower the top from outside. The 911 doesn’t offer a remote top, so the driver will have to run to the car, get in, turn the ignition on and raise the top to prevent the interior from being damaged.

The 720S was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2018. The 911 has never been an “All Star.”
