Compare the2022 McLaren 720SVS 2021 Mercedes AMG GT

The 720S offers an optional 360 Degree Park Assist to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Mercedes AMG GT only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the 720S and the Mercedes AMG GT have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The 720S comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The AMG GT’s 50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

The 720S’ corrosion warranty is 5 years longer than the Mercedes AMG GT’s (10 vs. 5 years).

The battery on the 720S is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the 720S’ battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Mercedes AMG GT’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 187 more horsepower (710 vs. 523) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 494) than the Mercedes AMG GT’s standard 4.0 turbo V8. The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 160 more horsepower (710 vs. 550) and 66 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 502) than the Mercedes AMG GT C’s standard 4.0 turbo V8. The 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8 produces 133 more horsepower (710 vs. 577) and 52 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 516) than the Mercedes AMG GT R’s standard 4.0 turbo V8.

The 720S has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Mercedes AMG GT doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The 720S has standard air brakes, which adjust the rear spoiler automatically during high-speed braking in order to shorten stopping distances. The Mercedes AMG GT doesn’t offer air brakes.

The 720S stops shorter than the Mercedes AMG GT:

For better traction and acceleration, the 720S has larger rear tires than the Mercedes AMG GT (305/30R20 vs. 295/30R19).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 720S has standard 20-inch rear wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the Mercedes AMG GT Coupe.

The 720S offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Mercedes AMG GT doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 720S’ wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than on the Mercedes AMG GT (105.1 inches vs. 103.5 inches).

The 720S Coupe handles at 1.09 G’s, while the Mercedes AMG GT Coupe pulls only 1.03 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The 720S Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the Mercedes AMG GT Coupe (22.3 seconds @ 1.05 average G’s vs. 23.4 seconds @ .9 average G’s).

The McLaren 720S may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 550 pounds less than the Mercedes AMG GT.

The 720S’ standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The Mercedes AMG GT doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the 720S Coupe is quieter than the Mercedes AMG GT C Coupe (75 vs. 76 dB).

The 720S Coupe has a much larger trunk than the Mercedes AMG GT Coupe (12.7 vs. 10.1 cubic feet).

The 720S Spider has a much larger trunk with its top down than the Mercedes AMG GT Roadster (7.3 vs. 5.8 cubic feet).

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its September 2020 issue and they ranked the McLaren 720S Spider higher than the Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster.
