Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The AMG GT 4-Door has a standard Rear Cross Traffic Brake that use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The AMG GT 4-Door has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the RS 5 Sportback’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the AMG GT 4-Door has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the RS 5 Sportback.

The AMG GT 4-Door’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the AMG GT 4-Door and the RS 5 Sportback have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available lane departure warning systems.

The Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door weighs 537 pounds more than the Audi RS 5 Sportback. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

There are over 26 percent more Mercedes dealers than there are Audi dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the AMG GT 4-Door’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 25th in initial quality. With 47 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 32nd.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 15th in reliability. With 5 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 20th.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the AMG GT 4-Door gets better mileage than the RS 5 Sportback:

The AMG GT 4-Door has 5.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the RS 5 Sportback (21.1 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door higher (6 out of 10) than the Audi RS 5 Sportback (5). This means the AMG GT 4-Door produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the RS 5 Sportback every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is available on the Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the RS 5 Sportback.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the AMG GT 4-Door has larger standard rear tires than the RS 5 Sportback (285/40R19 vs. 265/35R19). The AMG GT 4-Door’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the RS 5 Sportback (315/30R21 vs. 275/30R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the AMG GT 4-Door offers optional 21-inch wheels. The RS 5 Sportback’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Suspension and Handling

The AMG GT 4-Door’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the AMG GT 4-Door’s wheelbase is 4.9 inches longer than on the RS 5 Sportback (116.2 inches vs. 111.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the AMG GT 4-Door is 3 inches wider in the front and 3.1 inches wider in the rear than on the RS 5 Sportback.

The AMG GT 53 handles at 1.00 G’s, while the RS 5 Sportback pulls only .97 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

Passenger Space

The AMG GT 4-Door has 5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the RS 5 Sportback (96 vs. 91).

The AMG GT 4-Door has 1.4 inches more front headroom, 2.1 inches more front shoulder room, 1.2 inches more rear headroom and 2.7 inches more rear shoulder room than the RS 5 Sportback.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mercedes service is better than Audi. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 6th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 5% lower rating, Audi is ranked 12th.

Ergonomics

The AMG GT 4-Door has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the RS 5 Sportback, the AMG GT 4-Door has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The AMG GT 4-Door’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The AMG GT 4-Door’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Audi does not offer a locking feature on the RS 5 Sportback’s standard power windows.

If the windows are left open on the AMG GT 4-Door the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the RS 5 Sportback can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

The AMG GT 4-Door’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The RS 5 Sportback’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the AMG GT 4-Door to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid. Its standard heated washer nozzles will defrost the washer fluid but not the windshield.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the AMG GT 4-Door has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer cornering lights. The AMG GT 4-Door also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

A manual rear sunshade is optional in the AMG GT 4-Door to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

The AMG GT 4-Door offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The RS 5 Sportback doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The AMG GT 4-Door’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, stopping and changing direction automatically. The RS 5 Sportback’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
