The CX-5 has standard Whiplash-Reducing Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash-Reducing Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Corsair doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the CX-5. But it costs extra on the Corsair.

Both the CX-5 and the Corsair have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mazda CX-5 is safer than the Lincoln Corsair:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Mazda CX-5 is safer than the Lincoln Corsair:

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the Mazda CX-5 is much safer than the Corsair:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the CX-5 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 76 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Corsair is only a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2021.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the CX-5’s reliability 60 points higher than the Corsair.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Mazda vehicles are more reliable than Lincoln vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Mazda first in reliability. Lincoln is ranked 26th.

Engine

The CX-5’s optional 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 10 lbs.-ft. more torque (320 vs. 310) than the Corsair’s optional 2.3 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Mazda CX-5 turbo 4 cyl. is faster than the Lincoln Corsair 2.3 turbo 4-cylinder:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the CX-5 gets better mileage than the Corsair running its gasoline engine:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the CX-5 (except Turbo)’s fuel efficiency. The Corsair doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The CX-5 has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Corsair Grand Touring Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (15.3 vs. 11.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the CX-5 Turbo’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Corsair:

Suspension and Handling

The CX-5 handles at .81 G’s, while the Corsair Standard AWD pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the CX-5’s turning circle is 1.1 feet tighter than the Corsair’s (36 feet vs. 37.1 feet).

Passenger Space

The CX-5 has .2 inches more front headroom, .3 inches more rear headroom, 1 inch more rear legroom and 4.5 inches more rear hip room than the Corsair.

Cargo Capacity

The CX-5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Corsair with its rear seat up (30.8 vs. 27.6 cubic feet). The CX-5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Corsair with its rear seat folded (59.3 vs. 57.6 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The CX-5 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Corsair doesn’t offer a locking fuel/charge port door.

The CX-5’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Corsair’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The CX-5’s headlights were rated “Good” to “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Corsair’s headlights are rated “Acceptable” to “Poor.”

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the CX-5 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the CX-5 will cost $140 less than the Corsair over a five-year period.

The CX-5 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the CX-5 will retain 50.99% to 52.92% of its original price after five years, while the Corsair only retains 45.92% to 47.69%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the CX-5 is less expensive to operate than the Corsair because it costs $536 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the CX-5 than the Corsair, including $275 less for a water pump, $247 less for a muffler, $98 less for front brake pads, $32 less for a starter, $37 less for fuel injection, $262 less for a fuel pump, $56 less for front struts, $578 less for a timing belt/chain and $764 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Mazda CX-5 will be $7687 to $9450 less than for the Lincoln Corsair.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® chose the Mazda CX-5 as its “Top Pick,” the highest scoring vehicle in its category, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Lincoln Corsair isn't recommended.

The CX-5 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 4 of the last 5 years. The Corsair has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Mazda CX-5 outsold the Lincoln Corsair by over seven to one during the 2021 model year.
