The Mercedes AMG GLC has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Range Rover doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The AMG GLC has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Range Rover’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the AMG GLC has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the Range Rover.

Both the AMG GLC and the Range Rover have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems and around view monitors.

There are over 2 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG GLC’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the AMG GLC’s reliability 38 points higher than the Range Rover.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 25th in initial quality. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 26th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 15th in reliability. With 122 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 33rd.

The AMG GLC’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 30 more horsepower (385 vs. 355) and 19 lbs.-ft. more torque (384 vs. 365) than the Range Rover P360’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid.

On the EPA test cycle the AMG GLC gets better mileage than the Range Rover:

Both the AMG GLC and the Range Rover have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. All AMG GLCs have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The Range Rover P360/P400 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes AMG GLC, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Range Rover.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the AMG GLC 43 has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the Range Rover.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the AMG GLC can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Range Rover doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The AMG GLC 43 handles at .94 G’s, while the Range Rover pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The AMG GLC 43 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.5 seconds quicker than the Range Rover HSE (25.2 seconds @ .75 average G’s vs. 27.7 seconds @ .67 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the AMG GLC’s turning circle is .8 feet tighter than the Range Rover’s (39.7 feet vs. 40.5 feet). The AMG GLC’s turning circle is 3.1 feet tighter than the Range Rover LWB’s (39.7 feet vs. 42.8 feet).

The Mercedes AMG GLC may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 850 to 1550 pounds less than the Land Rover Range Rover.

The AMG GLC is 1 foot, 1.4 inches shorter than the Range Rover, making the AMG GLC easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The AMG GLC is 5.6 inches narrower than the Range Rover, making the AMG GLC easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The AMG GLC is 9 inches shorter in height than the Range Rover, making the AMG GLC much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The AMG GLC’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The Range Rover’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mercedes service is better than Land Rover. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 6th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 68% lower rating, Land Rover is ranked 31st.

If the windows are left open on the AMG GLC the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote (remote must be aimed at door sensor). On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Range Rover can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the AMG GLC to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Range Rover doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the AMG GLC offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Range Rover doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the AMG GLC has standard extendable sun visors. The Range Rover doesn’t offer extendable visors.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes AMG GLC offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Range Rover doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The AMG GLC’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting and stopping automatically, with the driver only responsible for switching from reverse to drive. The Range Rover’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

Insurance will cost less for the AMG GLC owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the AMG GLC will cost $6125 to $14120 less than the Range Rover over a five-year period.

The AMG GLC will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the AMG GLC will retain 52.68% of its original price after five years, while the Range Rover only retains 40.92% to 45.47%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the AMG GLC is less expensive to operate than the Range Rover because typical repairs cost much less on the AMG GLC than the Range Rover, including $107 less for fuel injection, $118 less for a fuel pump, $7 less for front struts and $841 less for a timing belt/chain.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Mercedes AMG GLC will be $31103 to $136752 less than for the Land Rover Range Rover.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Mercedes AMG GLC, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Land Rover Range Rover isn't recommended.
