Compare the2022 Mercedes GLCVS 2022 Jaguar E-Pace

The GLC’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The E-Pace doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes GLC are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar E-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Mercedes GLC has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The E-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The GLC has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the E-Pace’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the GLC has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the E-Pace.

Both the GLC and the E-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, lane departure warning systems and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, with its optional vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, with its optional vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the GLC the rating of “Top Pick” for 2021, a rating granted to only 145 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The E-Pace has not been tested, yet.

There are over 2 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GLC’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GLC’s reliability 38 points higher than the E-Pace.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 15th in reliability. With 64 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

The GLC’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 9 more horsepower (255 vs. 246) and 4 lbs.-ft. more torque (273 vs. 269) than the E-Pace P250’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

For better traction, the GLC’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the E-Pace (255/45R20 vs. 245/45R21).

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the GLC can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The E-Pace doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The GLC has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The E-Pace’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The GLC’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The E-Pace doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GLC’s wheelbase is 7.5 inches longer than on the E-Pace (113.1 inches vs. 105.6 inches).

The GLC’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (53% to 47%) than the E-Pace’s (58.7% to 41.3%). This gives the GLC more stable handling and braking.

The GLC 300 4MATIC handles at .85 G’s, while the E-Pace SE pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GLC 300 4MATIC executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.8 seconds quicker than the E-Pace SE (26.6 seconds @ .66 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

The front grille of the GLC uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The E-Pace doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The GLC has .2 inches more front legroom, 1.2 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, 3 inches more rear legroom and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the E-Pace.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the GLC’s rear seats recline. The E-Pace’s rear seats don’t recline.

The GLC has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the E-Pace with its rear seat folded (56.5 vs. 49.5 cubic feet).

The GLC’s cargo area is larger than the E-Pace’s in almost every dimension:

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers the GLC’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The E-Pace doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The engine in the GLC is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the E-Pace. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mercedes service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 6th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 14% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 18th.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the E-Pace, the GLC offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

If the windows are left open on the GLC the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the E-Pace can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The GLC has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Consumer Reports rated the GLC’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the E-Pace’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the GLC offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The E-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GLC has standard extendable sun visors. The E-Pace doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GLC to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The E-Pace doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the GLC keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The E-Pace doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The GLC offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GLC’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting and stopping automatically, with the driver only responsible for switching from reverse to drive. The E-Pace doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The GLC is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the GLC owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the GLC will cost $335 to $1460 less than the E-Pace over a five-year period.

The GLC will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the GLC will retain 51.03% to 51.13% of its original price after five years, while the E-Pace only retains 46.91% to 47.16%.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Mercedes GLC, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Jaguar E-Pace isn't recommended.

Motor Trend selected the GLC as their 2017 Sport Utility of the Year. The E-Pace has never been chosen.

The Mercedes GLC outsold the Jaguar E-Pace by almost 20 to one during the 2021 model year.
