Both the Range Rover Velar and QX55 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Velar has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The QX55’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Velar’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The QX55 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the QX55 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Engine

The Range Rover Velar P340’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 67 more horsepower (335 vs. 268) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (354 vs. 280) than the QX55’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Range Rover Velar P400’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 127 more horsepower (395 vs. 268) and 125 lbs.-ft. more torque (405 vs. 280) than the QX55’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover Velar’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The QX55 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stop lights the Range Rover Velar’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The QX55 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Range Rover Velar has 5.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the QX55 (21.7 vs. 16 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Land Rover Range Rover Velar higher (7 out of 10) than the Infiniti QX55 (6). This means the Range Rover Velar produces up to 1.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the QX55 every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Velar’s brake rotors are larger than those on the QX55:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover Velar’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the QX55 (265/45R21 vs. 255/45R20).

The Range Rover Velar’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the QX55’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Velar offers optional 22-inch wheels. The QX55’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the QX55; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Velar has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The QX55’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional continuously variable suspension system. Using sensors on steering angle, speed and other driver inputs, the shocks soften to improve ride, or stiffen when appropriate to aid handling on tricky roads or off-road. The QX55’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Range Rover Velar has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Velar’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The QX55 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Velar’s wheelbase is 3 inches longer than on the QX55 (113.2 inches vs. 110.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Velar is .3 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the QX55.

The Range Rover Velar’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.1% to 49.9%) than the QX55’s (57.9% to 42.1%). This gives the Range Rover Velar more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Velar w/Air Suspension has a 1.3 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the QX55 (9.9 vs. 8.6 inches), allowing the Range Rover Velar to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The Range Rover Velar has .7 inches more front legroom and 2 inches more rear headroom than the QX55.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Velar has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the QX55 with its rear seat up (30.9 vs. 26.9 cubic feet). The Range Rover Velar has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the QX55 with its rear seat folded (62.7 vs. 54.1 cubic feet).

Towing

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover Velar uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The QX55 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Range Rover Velar is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the QX55. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the QX55 Essential/Sensory, the Range Rover Velar has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The power windows standard on both the Range Rover Velar and the QX55 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Range Rover Velar is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The QX55 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Range Rover Velar’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The QX55’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Velar to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The QX55 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Velar offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The QX55 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Range Rover Velar’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Infiniti only offers heated mirrors on the QX55 Essential/Sensory.

The Range Rover Velar’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The QX55 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the QX55 have standard heated front seats. The Range Rover Velar also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the QX55.

The Range Rover Velar HSE has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the QX55.

The Range Rover Velar’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The QX55 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
