The Honda Odyssey has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Acadia doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Odyssey has a standard Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Acadia doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Odyssey and the Acadia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the GMC Acadia:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the GMC Acadia:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Odyssey is 1.5% to 2.8% less likely to roll over than the Acadia.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Odyssey its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 76 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Acadia last would have qualified as only a standard “Top Pick” in 2017.

Warranty

The Odyssey’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Acadia’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability

The engine in the Odyssey has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the Acadia have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Odyssey second among minivans in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Acadia isn’t in the top three in its category.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 11 places higher in reliability than GMC.

Engine

The Odyssey’s 3.5 SOHC V6 produces 52 more horsepower (280 vs. 228) and 4 lbs.-ft. more torque (262 vs. 258) than the Acadia’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Odyssey gets better mileage than the Acadia:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Odyssey uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Acadia with the 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Honda Odyssey, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a nine-speed automatic is available for the Acadia.

Brakes and Stopping

The Odyssey stops shorter than the Acadia:

Tires and Wheels

The Odyssey’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Acadia SLE/SLT’s standard 65 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Odyssey has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Acadia AT4.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Odyssey’s wheelbase is 5.6 inches longer than on the Acadia (118.1 inches vs. 112.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Odyssey is 2.8 inches wider in the front and 2.7 inches wider in the rear than on the Acadia.

Passenger Space

The Odyssey offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the Acadia can only carry up to 7.

The Odyssey has 19.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Acadia (163.6 vs. 143.8).

The Odyssey has .7 inches more front headroom, 2.9 inches more front hip room, 3.7 inches more front shoulder room, 1.2 inches more rear legroom, 11.5 inches more rear hip room, 2.9 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.1 inches more third row headroom, 8.4 inches more third row legroom, 5.5 inches more third row hip room and 5.7 inches more third row shoulder room than the Acadia.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Odyssey’s middle and third row seats recline. The Acadia’s third row seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Odyssey’s cargo area provides more volume than the Acadia.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Odyssey easier. The Odyssey’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 22.5 inches, while the Acadia’s liftover is 32 inches.

The Odyssey has a standard One-Motion Magic Seat third row seat, which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Acadia doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Odyssey. The Acadia doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The Odyssey’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Acadia’s (3500 vs. 1000 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Odyssey’s standard front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Acadia’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically. The Odyssey EX/EX-L/Touring/Elite’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches.

If the windows are left open on the Odyssey the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Acadia can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Odyssey has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Acadia doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Odyssey Elite’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Acadia’s intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Odyssey’s headlights were rated “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Acadia’s headlights are rated “Marginal.”

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Odyssey owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Odyssey will cost $770 less than the Acadia over a five-year period.

The Odyssey will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Odyssey will retain 49.64% to 54.86% of its original price after five years, while the Acadia only retains 44.46% to 48.31%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Odyssey is less expensive to operate than the Acadia because it costs $673 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Odyssey than the Acadia, including $125 less for front brake pads, $110 less for fuel injection, $22 less for a fuel pump, $34 less for front struts, $822 less for a timing belt/chain and $596 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Odyssey will be $713 to $5028 less than for the GMC Acadia.
