The DBS’ blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The 720S doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

Both the DBS and the 720S have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The Aston Martin DBS weighs 818 to 1160 pounds more than the McLaren 720S. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Reliability

The 720S’ redline is at 8500 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The DBS has a 7200 RPM redline.

Engine

The DBS’ 5.2 turbo V12 produces 5 more horsepower (715 vs. 710) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (664 vs. 568) than the 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the DBS’ fuel efficiency. The 720S doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The DBS has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the 720S (21.1 vs. 19 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Aston Martin DBS, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the 720S.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the DBS’ front brake rotors are larger than those on the 720S:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the DBS has larger front tires than the 720S (F:265/35R21 & R:305/30R21 vs. F:245/35R19 & R:305/30R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the DBS has standard 21-inch wheels. Only 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are available on the 720S.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the DBS’ wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than on the 720S (110.4 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

The DBS’ front to rear weight distribution is more even (51% to 49%) than the 720S’ (42% to 58%). This gives the DBS more stable handling and braking.

Passenger Space

The DBS has standard seating for 4 passengers; the 720S can only carry 2.

The DBS has 24 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 720S (72 vs. 48).

The DBS has 1.1 inches more front headroom, 2.7 inches more front legroom and 11.9 inches more front shoulder room than the 720S.

Cargo Capacity

The DBS Volante has a larger trunk with its top down than the 720S Spider (7.8 vs. 7.3 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The DBS’ standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the 720S.

If the windows are left open on the DBS the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the 720S can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

The DBS’ power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The 720S’ power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the DBS keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The 720S doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the DBS’ optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The 720S doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

To help keep the driver’s hands on the wheel, the DBS has standard steering wheel controls for the radio. The 720S doesn’t offer steering wheel audio controls.

With standard voice command, the DBS offers the driver hands free control of the radio and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The 720S doesn’t offer a voice control system.

The DBS’ Auto Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The 720S doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
