For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volkswagen Arteon are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Arteon SEL Premium has a standard Overhead View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 2 Series Gran Coupe only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Arteon and the 2 Series Gran Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and lane departure warning systems.

The Volkswagen Arteon’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

The Arteon’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 72 more horsepower (300 vs. 228) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the 228i Gran Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

The Arteon has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (17.4 vs. 13.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Arteon offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

For better traction, the Arteon has larger tires than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (245/45R18 vs. 225/45R17). The Arteon’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 2 Series Gran Coupe (245/45R18 vs. 235/35R19).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Arteon has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The Arteon’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The Arteon has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Arteon’s wheelbase is 6.8 inches longer than on the 2 Series Gran Coupe (111.9 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

The Arteon has 1 inch more front shoulder room, 1.4 inches more rear headroom, 5.8 inches more rear legroom and 1.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Arteon SEL Premium has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a power trunk, so its trunk has to be closed manually.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Arteon has standard extendable sun visors. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Arteon has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The Arteon SEL Premium also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Arteon SEL Premium keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Arteon SEL Premium has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Volkswagen Arteon has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
