Both the Sierra Limited and the Silverado 1500 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Sierra Limited the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 212 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Silverado 1500 has not been tested, yet.

Reliability

The Sierra Limited has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Silverado 1500 doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 1 place higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Sierra Limited Double/Crew Cab’s standard fuel tank has 2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Silverado 1500 Diesel’s standard fuel tank (24 vs. 22 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Sierra Limited’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Silverado 1500:
