Compare the2022 Fiat 500XVS 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the 500X. But it costs extra on the Corolla Cross.

Both the 500X and the Corolla Cross have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front and rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the 500X the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 212 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Corolla Cross has not been tested, yet.

The 500X comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Corolla Cross’ 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The engine in the 500X has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the Corolla Cross has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

The 500X’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder produces 8 more horsepower (177 vs. 169) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (210 vs. 151) than the Corolla Cross’ 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder.

The 500X has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The 500X AWD’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Corolla Cross’ standard 65 series tires. The 500X Sport’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Corolla Cross XLE’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 500X Sport offers optional 19-inch wheels. The Corolla Cross’ largest wheels are only 18-inches.

For superior ride and handling, the Fiat 500X has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Corolla Cross FWD has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The 500X is 8.4 inches shorter than the Corolla Cross, making the 500X easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 500X is 5.2 inches narrower than the Corolla Cross, making the 500X easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The 500X has .7 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 2.8 inches more rear legroom, 8.4 inches more rear hip room and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Corolla Cross.

The 500X’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Corolla Cross’ (2000 vs. 1500 pounds).

The 500X has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior, with the optional automatic climate control feature. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The 500X’s standard variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The Corolla Cross L’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent. The 500X Trekking/Sport/Trekking Plus’ optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Corolla Cross LE/XLE’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.
