Full-time four-wheel drive is optional on the Sierra Limited. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Tundra.

Both the Sierra Limited and the Tundra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Sierra Limited the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 212 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Tundra has not been tested, yet.

The Sierra Limited has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Tundra doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

The Sierra Limited’s 3.0 turbo diesel produces 55 lbs.-ft. more torque (460 vs. 405) than the Tundra SR’s standard 3.4 turbo V6.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Sierra Limited (except Diesel)’s fuel efficiency. The Tundra doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the GMC Sierra Limited uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 6.2 V8 engine for maximum performance). The Tundra requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Sierra Limited Double/Crew Cab’s standard fuel tank has 1.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tundra’s standard fuel tank (24 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Sierra Limited has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Tundra doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Sierra Limited has larger standard tires than the Tundra (255/70R17 vs. 245/75R18).

The Sierra Limited’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 70 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Tundra SR’s standard 75 series tires. The Sierra Limited’s optional tires have a lower 50 series profile than the Tundra TRD Sport/Limited/1794’s 60 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Sierra Limited offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Tundra’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Sierra Limited has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tundra doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Sierra Limited 4x4 with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Sierra Limited can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Tundra can’t be towed flat on the ground.

The Sierra Limited offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Tundra doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The GMC Sierra Limited comes in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the Toyota Tundra isn’t available as a regular cab.
