Full-time four-wheel drive is optional on the Silverado Limited. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Tundra.

Both the Silverado Limited and the Tundra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Silverado Limited the rating of “Top Pick” for 2016, a rating granted to only 219 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Tundra has not been tested, yet.

The Silverado Limited’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Tundra’s (6 vs. 5 years).

There are over 2 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Silverado Limited’s warranty.

The Silverado Limited has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Tundra doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet 10th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked 13th.

The Silverado Limited’s 3.0 turbo diesel produces 55 lbs.-ft. more torque (460 vs. 405) than the Tundra SR’s standard 3.4 turbo V6.

On the EPA test cycle the Silverado Limited gets better mileage than the Tundra:

An optional engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Silverado Limited (except Diesel)’s fuel efficiency. The Tundra doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Silverado Limited uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 6.2 V8 engine for maximum performance). The Tundra requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Silverado Limited Double/Crew Cab’s standard fuel tank has 1.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tundra’s standard fuel tank (24 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Silverado Limited has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Tundra doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Silverado Limited has larger standard tires than the Tundra (255/70R17 vs. 245/75R18).

The Silverado Limited’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 70 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Tundra SR’s standard 75 series tires. The Silverado Limited’s optional tires have a lower 50 series profile than the Tundra TRD Sport/Limited/1794’s 60 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Silverado Limited offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Tundra’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Silverado Limited has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tundra doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Silverado Limited has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The Tundra doesn’t offer stake post holes.

Maximum trailer towing in the Toyota Tundra is limited to 12000 pounds. The Silverado 1500 Limited Standard Bed Double Cab 4x4 offers up to a 13300 lbs. towing capacity.

The Silverado Limited 4WD can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Silverado Limited can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Tundra can’t be towed flat on the ground.

The Silverado Limited Custom/LT/RST/LTZ/High Country has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior, with the optional automatic climate control feature. The Tundra doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Chevrolet Silverado Limited comes in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the Toyota Tundra isn’t available as a regular cab.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Silverado Limited as the 2014 North American Truck of the Year. The Tundra has never been chosen.
