Compare the2022 Honda PassportVS 2021 Toyota Venza

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Passport deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Passport’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Venza’s airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Both the Passport and the Venza have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Passport is safer than the Toyota Venza:

The engine in the Passport has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the Venza has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

The Passport’s standard 3.5 SOHC V6 produces 61 more horsepower (280 vs. 219) and 262 lbs.-ft. more torque (262 vs. ) than the Venza’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Honda Passport is faster than the Toyota Venza:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Passport’s fuel efficiency. The Venza doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Both the Passport and the Venza have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. All Passports have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

The Passport has 5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Venza (19.5 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Passport has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Venza doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better stopping power the Passport’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Venza:

For better traction, the Passport has larger standard tires than the Venza (245/60R18 vs. 225/60R18). The Passport EX-L/Elite’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Venza (265/45R20 vs. 225/60R18).

The Passport EX-L/Elite’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Venza XLE/Limited’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Passport EX-L/Elite has standard 20-inch wheels. The Venza’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The Passport has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Venza doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Passport has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Venza doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Passport’s wheelbase is 5 inches longer than on the Venza (110.9 inches vs. 105.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Passport is 3.8 inches wider in the front and 3 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Venza.

For greater off-road capability the Passport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Venza (8.1 vs. 7.8 inches), allowing the Passport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Passport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Venza doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Passport has 16.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Venza (114.9 vs. 98.3).

The Passport has .9 inches more front headroom, 4.7 inches more front hip room, 4.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom, 1.8 inches more rear legroom, 12.1 inches more rear hip room and 5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Venza.

The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Venza with its rear seat up (41.2 vs. 28.8 cubic feet). The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Venza with its rear seat folded (77.7 vs. 55.1 cubic feet).

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Passport’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Venza doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Passport has a 3500 lbs. towing capacity. The Venza has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the Passport uses the Vehicle Stability Assist sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Venza doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Passport has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Venza doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Passport’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Venza’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Consumer Reports rated the Passport’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Venza’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Passport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Venza doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Passport is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Venza’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Passport’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Venza offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Passport has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats are only available on the Venza XLE/Limited. The Passport Elite also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Venza.

The Passport TrailSport/Elite has a 115-volt a/c outlet, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Venza doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Passport is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Venza doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the Passport owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Passport will cost $740 less than the Venza over a five-year period.

The Honda Passport outsold the Toyota Venza by over two to one during the 2021 model year.
