Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Passport deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Passport’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Envision’s airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Both the Passport and the Envision have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Passport is safer than the Buick Envision:

The Passport’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Envision’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

The engine in the Passport has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the Envision has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

The Passport’s 3.5 SOHC V6 produces 52 more horsepower (280 vs. 228) and 4 lbs.-ft. more torque (262 vs. 258) than the Envision’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Honda Passport is faster than the Buick Envision:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Passport uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Envision requires mid-grade for maximum efficiency, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The Passport has 3.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision FWD’s standard fuel tank (19.5 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Passport has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the Envision AWD’s standard fuel tank (19.5 vs. 16.1 gallons).

For better traction, the Passport has larger standard tires than the Envision (245/60R18 vs. 235/60R18). The Passport EX-L/Elite’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Envision (265/45R20 vs. 245/45R20).

The Passport has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Envision doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Passport has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Envision doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Passport’s wheelbase is 1.5 inches longer than on the Envision (110.9 inches vs. 109.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Passport is 3.5 inches wider in the front and 3.5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Envision.

The Passport has 14.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Envision (114.9 vs. 100.4).

The Passport has .5 inches more front legroom, 4 inches more front hip room, 5.3 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear headroom, .3 inches more rear legroom, 9.9 inches more rear hip room and 6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Envision.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Passport’s rear seats recline. The Envision’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Envision with its rear seat up (41.2 vs. 25.2 cubic feet). The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Envision with its rear seat folded (77.7 vs. 52.7 cubic feet).

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Passport’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Envision doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Passport. The Envision doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Passport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Envision’s (3500 vs. 1500 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Buick Envision is only 1500 pounds. The Passport AWD offers up to a 5000 lbs. towing capacity.

If the windows are left open on the Passport the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Envision can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Passport has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Envision doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Passport’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Envision’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Consumer Reports rated the Passport’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Envision’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Passport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Envision doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Passport has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Envision.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Honda Passport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Envision Avenir offers wireless charging.

The Passport will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Passport will retain 50.86% to 51.72% of its original price after five years, while the Envision only retains 43.09% to 43.62%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Passport will be $930 to $1181 less than for the Buick Envision.
