The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The HR-V doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Outlander Sport has standard Active Front Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Front Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The HR-V doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Outlander Sport SE/GT’s standard rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The HR-V doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Outlander Sport and the HR-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front wheel drive, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, and rear parking sensors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is safer than the Honda HR-V:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is safer than the Honda HR-V:

Warranty

The Outlander Sport comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The HR-V’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander Sport 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Honda covers the HR-V. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the HR-V ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Outlander Sport’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the HR-V’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Outlander Sport has a standard 530-amp battery. The HR-V’s 410-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Outlander Sport second among small suvs in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The HR-V isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are better in initial quality than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi third in initial quality, above the industry average. With 20 more problems per 100 vehicles, Honda is ranked 17th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are more reliable than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 29 more problems per 100 vehicles, Honda is ranked 27th.

Engine

The Outlander Sport’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 7 more horsepower (148 vs. 141) and 18 lbs.-ft. more torque (145 vs. 127) than the HR-V’s 1.8 SOHC 4-cylinder. The Outlander Sport GT’s standard 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 27 more horsepower (168 vs. 141) and 40 lbs.-ft. more torque (167 vs. 127) than the HR-V’s 1.8 SOHC 4-cylinder.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder is faster than the Honda HR-V:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Outlander Sport AWD’s standard fuel tank has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the HR-V (15.8 vs. 13.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Outlander Sport FWD’s standard fuel tank has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the HR-V (16.6 vs. 13.2 gallons).

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Honda HR-V has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Outlander Sport has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Outlander Sport flat and controlled during cornering. The HR-V 4x2 suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Outlander Sport’s wheelbase is 2.3 inches longer than on the HR-V (105.1 inches vs. 102.8 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Outlander Sport’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the HR-V’s (34.8 feet vs. 37.4 feet). The Outlander Sport’s turning circle is 3.9 feet tighter than the HR-V Sport’s (34.8 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Outlander Sport has a 1.8 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the HR-V (8.5 vs. 6.7 inches), allowing the Outlander Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Outlander Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 1.6 inches higher than on the HR-V Sport (8.5 vs. 6.9 inches).

Passenger Space

The Outlander Sport has .4 inches more front legroom, 4.2 inches more rear hip room and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the HR-V.

Ergonomics

The Outlander Sport offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The HR-V doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Outlander Sport’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The HR-V LX/Sport’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent. The HR-V EX/EX-L’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Outlander Sport has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The HR-V has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the EX/EX-L.

The Outlander Sport’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Honda only offers heated mirrors on the HR-V EX/EX-L.

The Outlander Sport has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The HR-V doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Outlander Sport owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Outlander Sport with a number “1” insurance rate while the HR-V is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Outlander Sport is less expensive to operate than the HR-V because typical repairs cost less on the Outlander Sport than the HR-V, including $137 less for a starter.
