In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. Both the Silverado Limited and the 1500 TRX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Silverado Limited the rating of “Top Pick” for 2016, a rating granted to only 219 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The 1500 TRX has not been tested, yet.

The Silverado Limited’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the 1500 TRX’s (6 vs. 5 years).

The Silverado Limited has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Ram vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet 12th in reliability, above the industry average. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ram is ranked 16th.

On the EPA test cycle the Silverado Limited gets better mileage than the 1500 TRX:

An optional engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Silverado Limited (except Diesel)’s fuel efficiency. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stop lights the Silverado Limited (except V8 ten-speed)’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip with its optional disable switch. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Silverado Limited uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 6.2 V8 engine for maximum performance). The 1500 TRX requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Chevrolet Silverado Limited higher (3 to 6 out of 10) than the Ram 1500 TRX (1). This means the Silverado Limited produces up to 45.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the 1500 TRX every 15,000 miles.

A ten-speed automatic is available on the Chevrolet Silverado Limited, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the 1500 TRX.

The Silverado Limited stops much shorter than the 1500 TRX:

The Silverado Limited’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 1500 TRX’s 65 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Silverado Limited offers optional 22-inch wheels. The 1500 TRX’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Silverado 1500 Limited Short Bed Crew Cab’s wheelbase is 2.3 inches longer than on the 1500 TRX (147.4 inches vs. 145.1 inches). The Silverado 1500 Limited Standard Bed Crew Cab’s wheelbase is 11.9 inches longer than on the 1500 TRX (157 inches vs. 145.1 inches).

The Silverado 1500 Limited Standard Bed RST Double Cab 4x4 handles at .81 G’s, while the 1500 TRX pulls only .70 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Silverado 1500 Limited Short Bed High Country Crew Cab 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the 1500 TRX (27.5 seconds @ .64 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Silverado 1500 Limited Short Bed Crew Cab’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the 1500 TRX’s (46.3 feet vs. 48.3 feet).

The Chevrolet Silverado Limited may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1950 pounds less than the Ram 1500 TRX.

The Silverado 1500 Limited Long Bed Regular Cab is 3.4 inches shorter than the 1500 TRX, making the Silverado Limited easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Silverado Limited Diesel has an electronically controlled liquid-filled front engine mount. A computer-controlled electric current in the liquid changes its viscosity, allowing the mount to dampen the engine completely at all RPMs. The 1500 TRX uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Silverado 1500 Limited Short Bed High Country Crew Cab 4x4 is quieter than the 1500 TRX:

The Silverado Limited Crew Cab shortbed has a much larger cargo box than the 1500 TRX shortbed (62.9 vs. 53.9 cubic feet).

A low lift-over bed design makes loading and unloading the Silverado Limited easier. The Silverado Limited’s bed lift-over height is 36.1 inches, while the 1500 TRX’s liftover is 38.1 inches.

The Chevrolet Silverado Limited offers an optional EZ Lift Tailgate, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. The Ram 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a tailgate assist.

The Chevrolet Silverado Limited has a standard CornerStep, which allows for much easier access to the cargo area. The Ram 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a rear cargo step.

The Silverado Limited has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer stake post holes.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Silverado Limited (except Work Truck/Custom) offers an optional power tailgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a power cargo door.

Maximum trailer towing in the Ram 1500 TRX is limited to 8100 pounds. The Silverado 1500 Limited Standard Bed Double Cab 4x4 offers up to a 13300 lbs. towing capacity.

The Silverado 1500 Limited Short Bed Crew Cab 4x4 has a much higher standard payload capacity than the 1500 TRX (2020 vs. 1310 lbs.).

The Silverado Limited LTZ/High Country’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Silverado Limited’s basic available front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The 1500 TRX’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.

On a hot day the Silverado Limited’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote (optional feature). The driver of the 1500 TRX can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Silverado Limited’s optional rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The 1500 TRX offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Chevrolet Silverado Limited comes in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the Ram 1500 TRX isn’t available as a regular cab or extended cab.

The Silverado Limited is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Chevrolet Silverado Limited will be $16606 to $32836 less than for the Ram 1500 TRX.
