For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes GLE have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Genesis GV80 doesn’t offer pretensioners for the middle seat belts.

The GLE’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GV80 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Compared to metal, the GLE’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV80 has a metal gas tank.

Both the GLE and the GV80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available lane departure warning systems and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mercedes GLE is safer than the Genesis GV80:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Mercedes GLE is safer than the Genesis GV80:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard front crash prevention system, and its headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the GLE its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2019, a rating granted to only 114 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The GV80 is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2019.

Warranty

There are over 13 percent more Mercedes dealers than there are Genesis dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the GLE’s warranty.

Engine

The GLE 450’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 62 more horsepower (362 vs. 300) and 58 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 311) than the GV80’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the GLE 450 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid is faster than the Genesis GV80 turbo V6:

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the GLE 450’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The GV80 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The GLE has 1.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the GV80 (22.5 vs. 21.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes GLE, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the GV80.

Brakes and Stopping

The GLE stops shorter than the GV80:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the GLE’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GV80 (F:275/45R21 & R:315/40R21 vs. 265/40R22).

The GLE’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GV80’s standard 55 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The GLE 450 offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Genesis doesn’t offer an active suspension on the GV80.

The GLE’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The GV80 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GLE’s wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than on the GV80 (117.9 inches vs. 116.3 inches).

The GLE 450 handles at .84 G’s, while the GV80 ADVANCED AWD pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GLE 450 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the GV80 Standard AWD (27 seconds @ .69 average G’s vs. 27.4 seconds @ .63 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the GLE Airmatic has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the GV80 (9.2 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the GLE to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the GLE 450 is quieter than the GV80 ADVANCED AWD (70 vs. 72 dB).

Passenger Space

The GLE has .3 inches more front headroom, 1.2 inches more rear headroom, 2.2 inches more rear legroom and .1 inches more rear shoulder room than the GV80.

Cargo Capacity

The GLE has a much larger cargo volume than the GV80 with its rear seat up (33.3 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Genesis GV80 is limited to 6000 pounds. The GLE offers up to a 7700 lbs. towing capacity.

Optional Trailer Stability Assist on the GLE uses the Electronic Stability Program sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV80 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mercedes service is better than Genesis. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 6th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 3% lower rating, Genesis is ranked 9th.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the GV80, the GLE offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GLE’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The GV80 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

If the windows are left open on the GLE the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the GV80 can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The GLE’s headlights were rated “Good” to “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the GV80’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the GLE offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The GV80 doesn’t offer cornering lights. The GLE also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes GLE has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the GV80.

Economic Advantages

The GLE will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the GLE will retain 47.77% to 49.94% of its original price after five years, while the GV80 only retains 44.45% to 45.87%.

Recommendations

The Mercedes GLE outsold the Genesis GV80 by almost four to one during the 2021 model year.
