Both the X1 and UX have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. The X1 has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

The X1 has 5.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the UX Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (16.1 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The X1 has 3.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the UX’s standard fuel tank (16.1 vs. 12.4 gallons).

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW X1 higher (7 out of 10) than the Lexus UX (6 to 7). This means the X1 produces up to 1.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the UX every 15,000 miles.

The X1’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The UX doesn’t offer launch control.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the X1 offers optional 19-inch wheels. The UX’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The X1 offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the UX; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the X1’s wheelbase is 1.2 inches longer than on the UX (105.1 inches vs. 103.9 inches).

The X1 xDrive28i handles at .87 G’s, while the UX 200 Luxury pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The X1 xDrive28i executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the UX 200 (26.8 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.2 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

The X1 has 10.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the UX (101.2 vs. 90.4).

The X1 has 4.7 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front shoulder room, 3.1 inches more rear headroom, 3.9 inches more rear legroom and 2.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the UX.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the X1’s available rear seats recline. The UX’s rear seats don’t recline.

The X1 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the UX (27.1 vs. 17.1 cubic feet).

The X1 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The UX uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

The power windows standard on both the X1 and the UX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the X1 is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The UX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The X1’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The UX’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The X1’s optional Parking Assistant can parallel park by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The UX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
