Compare the2022 BMW X1VS 2022 Jaguar E-Pace

The BMW X1 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The E-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the X1 and the E-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive and driver alert monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, rear impact and roof-crush tests, its standard front crash prevention system, its “Good” rating in the new passenger-side small overlap crash test, and its headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the X1 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2019, a rating granted to only 175 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The E-Pace has not been tested, yet.

The X1’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the E-Pace’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are almost 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X1’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the X1’s reliability 39 points higher than the E-Pace.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 10th in reliability, above the industry average. With 78 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

As tested in Motor Trend the BMW X1 is faster than the E-Pace P250 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder:

The X1’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The E-Pace doesn’t offer launch control.

The X1 stops much shorter than the E-Pace:

The X1’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the E-Pace’s standard 60 series tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the X1 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The E-Pace doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The X1 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The E-Pace’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The X1 xDrive28i handles at .87 G’s, while the E-Pace SE pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The X1 xDrive28i executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the E-Pace SE (26.8 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the X1’s turning circle is .8 feet tighter than the E-Pace’s (37.4 feet vs. 38.2 feet).

The BMW X1 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 450 pounds less than the Jaguar E-Pace.

The X1 is 6.4 inches narrower than the E-Pace, making the X1 easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the X1 xDrive28i is quieter than the E-Pace SE (40 vs. 44 dB).

The X1 has 3.5 inches more front headroom, 1.1 inches more rear headroom and 2.7 inches more rear legroom than the E-Pace.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the X1’s available rear seats recline. The E-Pace’s rear seats don’t recline.

The X1 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the E-Pace with its rear seat up (27.1 vs. 22.4 cubic feet). The X1 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the E-Pace with its rear seat folded (58.7 vs. 49.5 cubic feet).

The X1’s cargo area is larger than the E-Pace’s in almost every dimension:

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that BMW service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 13% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 18th.

If the windows are left open on the X1 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the E-Pace can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The X1 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Consumer Reports rated the X1’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the E-Pace’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the X1 offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The E-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To shield the driver’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side window, the X1 has a standard extendable sun visor. The E-Pace doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The X1’s optional Parking Assistant can parallel park by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The E-Pace doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The X1 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The E-Pace doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the X1 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the X1 will cost $625 to $1775 less than the E-Pace over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the BMW X1 will be $5268 to $10526 less than for the Jaguar E-Pace.

The X1 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Five/10Best Trucks” for 3 of the last 5 years. The E-Pace has never been a Car and Driver “Top Five/10Best Truck” pick.

The BMW X1 outsold the Jaguar E-Pace by over six to one during the 2021 model year.
