The Jeep Grand Cherokee L doesn’t offer pretensioners for the middle seat belts.

The Bentayga’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Grand Cherokee L doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Bentayga and Grand Cherokee L have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Bentayga has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Grand Cherokee L’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Bentayga. But it costs extra on the Grand Cherokee L.

Both the Bentayga and the Grand Cherokee L have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available collision warning systems, night vision systems and lane departure warning systems.

The Bentayga comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Grand Cherokee L’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Bentayga have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the Grand Cherokee L.

The Bentayga’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 252 more horsepower (542 vs. 290) and 311 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 257) than the Grand Cherokee L’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6. The Bentayga’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 185 more horsepower (542 vs. 357) and 178 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 390) than the Grand Cherokee L’s optional 5.7 V8. The Bentayga SPEED’s standard 6.0 turbo 12-cylinder produces 269 more horsepower (626 vs. 357) and 274 lbs.-ft. more torque (664 vs. 390) than the Grand Cherokee L’s optional 5.7 V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Bentayga SPEED 6.0 turbo 12-cylinder is faster than the Jeep Grand Cherokee L V8:

On the EPA test cycle the Bentayga 4.0 turbo V8 gets better fuel mileage than the Grand Cherokee L 5.7 OHV V8 (15 city/24 hwy vs. 14 city/22 hwy).

Regardless of its engine, the Bentayga’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. Jeep only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the Grand Cherokee L V6.

For better stopping power the Bentayga’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Grand Cherokee L:

The Bentayga offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The Grand Cherokee L doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The Bentayga stops much shorter than the Grand Cherokee L:

For better traction, the Bentayga has larger tires than the Grand Cherokee L (285/45R21 vs. 265/60R18).

The Bentayga’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grand Cherokee L’s standard 60 series tires. The Bentayga’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Grand Cherokee L Summit’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Bentayga has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Grand Cherokee L. The Bentayga’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the Grand Cherokee L Summit.

The Bentayga offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Grand Cherokee L doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Bentayga uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Grand Cherokee L, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Bentayga offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jeep doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Grand Cherokee L.

The Bentayga is 3.1 inches shorter than the Grand Cherokee L, making the Bentayga easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Bentley Bentayga amounts to more than styling. The Bentayga has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .34 Cd. That is lower than the Grand Cherokee L (.357). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Bentayga get better fuel mileage.

The Bentayga’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Grand Cherokee L’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Bentayga to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Grand Cherokee L doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Bentayga has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Grand Cherokee L doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Grand Cherokee L’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The Bentayga’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

The Bentayga has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Grand Cherokee L.
