The Levante has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Levante. But it costs extra on the Stelvio.

The Levante offers an optional Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Stelvio only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Levante and the Stelvio have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available crash mitigating brakes and lane departure warning systems.

The Maserati Levante weighs 643 to 1169 pounds more than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Levante GT’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 65 more horsepower (345 vs. 280) and 63 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 306) than the Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Levante Modena’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 144 more horsepower (424 vs. 280) and 122 lbs.-ft. more torque (428 vs. 306) than the Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Levante Modena S’ standard 3.8 turbo V8 produces 270 more horsepower (550 vs. 280) and 232 lbs.-ft. more torque (538 vs. 306) than the Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Levante Trofeo’s standard 3.8 turbo V8 produces 300 more horsepower (580 vs. 280) and 232 lbs.-ft. more torque (538 vs. 306) than the Stelvio’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Levante Modena 3.0 turbo V6 is faster than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio:

The Levante has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Stelvio (21.1 vs. 16.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Levante Trofeo’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Stelvio doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the Levante has larger standard tires than the Stelvio (265/45R20 vs. 235/60R18). The Levante Modena S’ tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Stelvio (F:265/45R20 & R:295/40R20 vs. 255/45R20).

The Levante’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Stelvio’s standard 60 series tires. The Levante’s optional 265/35R22 front and 295/30R22 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the Stelvio’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Levante has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Stelvio. The Levante’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the Stelvio.

The front and rear suspension of the Levante uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Stelvio, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Levante has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Levante’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Stelvio doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Levante’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Stelvio doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Levante’s wheelbase is 7.4 inches longer than on the Stelvio (118.3 inches vs. 110.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Levante is .7 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Stelvio.

The Levante Modena handles at .91 G’s, while the Stelvio Sprint AWD pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Levante Modena executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the Stelvio Ti AWD (25.5 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 26.9 seconds @ .67 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Levante has a 1.6 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Stelvio (9.7 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Levante to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The front grille of the Levante uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Stelvio doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Levante has .2 inches more rear headroom and 2.7 inches more rear legroom than the Stelvio.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Levante’s rear seats recline. The Stelvio’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Levante has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Stelvio with its rear seat up (20.5 vs. 18.5 cubic feet). The Levante has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Stelvio with its rear seat folded (57.3 vs. 56.5 cubic feet).

Standard Trailer Sway Mitigation on the Levante uses the Maserati Stability Program sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Stelvio doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Levante’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Stelvio has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

On a hot day the Levante’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Stelvio can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Levante to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Stelvio doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Levante is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Stelvio’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Levante keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Stelvio doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
