The Maserati Ghibli has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Q50 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Ghibli has standard Anti-Whiplash Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Q50 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Ghibli and the Q50 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The battery on the Ghibli is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Ghibli’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Q50’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

The Ghibli has more powerful engines than the Q50:

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Ghibli’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. The Q50 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Ghibli has 1.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Q50 (21.1 vs. 20 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Ghibli has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Q50 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Maserati Ghibli, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the Q50.

For better traction, the Ghibli has larger standard tires than the Q50 (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 225/50R18).

The Ghibli’s standard 245/45R19 front and 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Q50 Luxe’s standard 50 series tires. The Ghibli’s optional 245/35R21 front and 285/30R21 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the Q50 Red Sport 400’s 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Q50 Luxe. The Ghibli’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels on the Q50 Sensory/Red Sport 400 AWD.

The Ghibli has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Q50; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Ghibli has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Q50’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ghibli’s wheelbase is 5.8 inches longer than on the Q50 (118 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Ghibli is 3.9 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Q50.

The Ghibli’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Q50 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Ghibli’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Q50’s parking brake has to be released manually.

The power windows standard on both the Ghibli and the Q50 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Ghibli is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Q50 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Ghibli to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Q50 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Ghibli offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Q50 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the Ghibli to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Q50 doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

Both the Ghibli and the Q50 have standard heated front seats. The Ghibli also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Q50.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Ghibli keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Q50 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Maserati Ghibli offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Q50 doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
