The Jeep Wagoneer has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Suburban doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Wagoneer has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Suburban doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Wagoneer Grand Wagoneer helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Suburban doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The Wagoneer has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Suburban’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Wagoneer has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the Suburban.

The Wagoneer’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Suburban doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Wagoneer and the Suburban have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Warranty

The Wagoneer’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Suburban’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Wagoneer for 5 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Suburban.

Reliability

The Jeep Wagoneer’s engines use a cast iron block for durability, while the Suburban’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Wagoneer has a 240-amp alternator. The Suburban’s standard 220-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 2 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is rated lower.

Engine

The Wagoneer’s standard 5.7 V8 hybrid produces 37 more horsepower (392 vs. 355) and 21 lbs.-ft. more torque (404 vs. 383) than the Suburban’s standard 5.3 V8. The Grand Wagoneer’s standard 6.4 V8 produces 51 more horsepower (471 vs. 420) than the Suburban’s optional 6.2 V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Grand Wagoneer 6.4 V8 is faster than the Chevrolet Suburban 5.3 V8:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Wagoneer gets better mileage than the Suburban:

Regenerative brakes improve the Wagoneer (except Grand Wagoneer)’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Suburban doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Regardless of its engine, the Wagoneer’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. Chevrolet only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the Suburban Diesel.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Wagoneer’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Suburban:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Wagoneer has larger standard tires than the Suburban (275/55R20 vs. 265/65R18). The Wagoneer’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Suburban (285/45R22 vs. 275/50R22).

The Wagoneer’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Suburban’s optional 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Wagoneer Series II handles at .67 G’s, while the Suburban High Country 4WD pulls only .53 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Grand Wagoneer Series III executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the Suburban Z71 4WD (29.2 seconds @ .57 average G’s vs. 30.9 seconds @ .5 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Wagoneer’s turning circle is 4.3 feet tighter than the Suburban’s (38 feet vs. 42.3 feet). The Wagoneer’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the Suburban w/20-22 inch wheels’ (38 feet vs. 43.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Wagoneer has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Suburban (8.3 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Wagoneer is 11 inches shorter than the Suburban, making the Wagoneer easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Suburban doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Wagoneer has 8.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Suburban (179.2 vs. 170.8).

The Wagoneer has 1.9 inches more front hip room, .1 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear headroom, .7 inches more rear legroom, 1.7 inches more rear hip room, .4 inches more rear shoulder room, .8 inches more third row headroom, 2.2 inches more third row hip room and 1.6 inches more third row shoulder room than the Suburban.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Wagoneer’s middle and third row seats recline. The Suburban’s third row seats don’t recline.

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Chevrolet Suburban is limited to 8300 pounds. The Wagoneer offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Suburban LT/RST/Z71/Premier/High Country, the Wagoneer Grand has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Wagoneer’s optional front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches. The Suburban’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

The Wagoneer has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Suburban doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Wagoneer offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Suburban doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Wagoneer to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Suburban doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Wagoneer has standard front air conditioned seats and the Wagoneer Grand Wagoneer offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Suburban doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Wagoneer has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Suburban.

The Wagoneer offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Suburban.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Jeep Wagoneer has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Suburban LT/RST/Z71/Premier/High Country offers wireless charging.

The Wagoneer’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Suburban doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
