In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Sierra Limited are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Both the Sierra Limited and the 1500 TRX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Sierra Limited the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 212 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The 1500 TRX has not been tested, yet.

The Sierra Limited’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the 1500 TRX’s (6 vs. 5 years).

The Sierra Limited has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

On the EPA test cycle the Sierra Limited gets better mileage than the 1500 TRX:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Sierra Limited (except Diesel)’s fuel efficiency. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stop lights the Sierra Limited eight-speed Auto/Diesel’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip with its optional disable switch. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the GMC Sierra Limited uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 6.2 V8 engine for maximum performance). The 1500 TRX requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the GMC Sierra Limited higher (3 to 6 out of 10) than the Ram 1500 TRX (1). This means the Sierra Limited produces up to 45.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the 1500 TRX every 15,000 miles.

A ten-speed automatic is available on the GMC Sierra Limited, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the 1500 TRX.

The Sierra Limited stops shorter than the 1500 TRX:

The Sierra Limited’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 1500 TRX’s 65 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Sierra Limited offers optional 22-inch wheels. The 1500 TRX’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sierra 1500 Limited Short Bed Crew Cab’s wheelbase is 2.3 inches longer than on the 1500 TRX (147.4 inches vs. 145.1 inches). The Sierra 1500 Limited Standard Bed Crew Cab’s wheelbase is 11.9 inches longer than on the 1500 TRX (157 inches vs. 145.1 inches).

The Sierra 1500 Limited Short Bed Denali Crew Cab 4x4 handles at .77 G’s, while the 1500 TRX pulls only .68 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sierra 1500 Limited Short Bed AT4 Crew Cab executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the 1500 TRX (27.7 seconds @ .73 average G’s vs. 28.4 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sierra 1500 Limited Short Bed Crew Cab’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the 1500 TRX’s (46.3 feet vs. 48.3 feet).

The GMC Sierra Limited may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1050 to 2150 pounds less than the Ram 1500 TRX.

The Sierra 1500 Limited Long Bed Regular Cab is 3.3 inches shorter than the 1500 TRX, making the Sierra Limited easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Sierra Limited’s optional rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The 1500 TRX offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The GMC Sierra Limited comes in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the Ram 1500 TRX isn’t available as a regular cab or extended cab.

The Sierra Limited is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The 1500 TRX doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the Sierra Limited owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Sierra Limited will cost $760 to $1770 less than the 1500 TRX over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the GMC Sierra Limited will be $16326 to $32597 less than for the Ram 1500 TRX.
