The Honda Accord Hybrid has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Prius doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Accord Hybrid deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Accord Hybrid’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Prius’ airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Compared to metal, the Accord Hybrid’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Toyota Prius has a metal gas tank.

Both the Accord Hybrid and the Prius have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Accord Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Prius:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Accord Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Prius:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Accord Hybrid, with its five-star roll-over rating, is 1.4% less likely to roll over than the Prius, which received a four-star rating.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Accord Hybrid its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 74 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Prius last would have qualified as only a standard “Top Pick” for 2019.

Engine

The Accord Hybrid’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid produces 91 more horsepower (212 vs. 121) and 127 lbs.-ft. more torque (232 vs. 105) than the Prius’ 1.8 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Honda Accord Hybrid is faster than the Toyota Prius:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Accord Hybrid has 2.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Prius AWD-e’s standard fuel tank (12.8 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Accord Hybrid has 1.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Prius FWD’s standard fuel tank (12.8 vs. 11.3 gallons).

The Accord Hybrid has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Prius doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Accord Hybrid’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Prius:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Accord Hybrid has larger standard tires than the Prius (225/50R17 vs. 195/65R15). The Accord Hybrid Sport/Touring’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Prius (235/40R19 vs. 215/45R17).

The Accord Hybrid’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Prius’ standard 65 series tires. The Accord Hybrid Sport/Touring’s tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Prius XLE FWD/Limited’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Accord Hybrid has standard 17-inch wheels. Smaller 15-inch wheels are standard on the Prius. The Accord Hybrid Sport/Touring’s 19-inch wheels are larger than the 17-inch wheels on the Prius XLE FWD/Limited.

Suspension and Handling

The Accord Hybrid offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Prius’ suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Accord Hybrid’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Prius doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Accord Hybrid’s wheelbase is 5.1 inches longer than on the Prius (111.4 inches vs. 106.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Accord Hybrid is 3.2 inches wider in the front and 3.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Prius.

Chassis

The Accord Hybrid uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Prius doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Accord Hybrid a Large car, while the Prius is rated a Mid-size.

The Accord Hybrid has 12.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Prius (105.6 vs. 93.1).

The Accord Hybrid has .1 inches more front headroom, 1.9 inches more front hip room, 3.3 inches more front shoulder room, 7 inches more rear legroom, 3.1 inches more rear hip room and 3.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Prius.

Cargo Capacity

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the Accord Hybrid offers cargo security. The Prius’ hatchback body style, non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Accord Hybrid. The Prius doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics

The Accord Hybrid has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Prius doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

When two different drivers share the Accord Hybrid EX-L/Touring, the memory system makes it convenient for both. Each keyless remote activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, outside mirror angle and climate settings. The Prius doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Accord Hybrid EX-L/Touring’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Prius doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Accord Hybrid’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Prius’ parking brake has to be released manually.

The Accord Hybrid’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Prius L Eco/LE’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Consumer Reports rated the Accord Hybrid’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Prius’ headlights, which were rated “Good.”

The Accord Hybrid has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Prius has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the XLE/Limited.

When the Accord Hybrid Touring is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Prius’ mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Accord Hybrid and the Prius offer available heated front seats. The Accord Hybrid Touring also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Prius.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Accord Hybrid Touring keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Prius doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Accord Hybrid’s standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The Prius doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

Both the Accord Hybrid and the Prius offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Accord Hybrid EX/EX-L/Touring has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Prius doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Accord Hybrid owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Accord Hybrid will cost $630 less than the Prius over a five-year period.

Recommendations

The Accord was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 25 of the last 27 years. The Prius has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Honda Accord outsold the Toyota Prius by over three to one during the 2021 model year.
