In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Accord Hybrid are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Accord Hybrid deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Accord Hybrid’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Avalon Hybrid’s airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

The Accord Hybrid’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Accord Hybrid and the Avalon Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Accord Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Avalon Hybrid:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Accord Hybrid is safer than the Toyota Avalon Hybrid:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Accord Hybrid, with its five-star roll-over rating, is 1.2% less likely to roll over than the Avalon Hybrid, which received a four-star rating.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Accord Hybrid its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2021, a rating granted to only 74 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Avalon Hybrid has not been fully tested, yet.

The Accord Hybrid has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Accord Hybrid’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Avalon Hybrid:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Accord Hybrid has larger standard tires than the Avalon Hybrid (225/50R17 vs. 215/55R17).

The Accord Hybrid’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Avalon Hybrid XLE’s standard 55 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Accord Hybrid offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Avalon Hybrid’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Accord Hybrid’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

Chassis

The Honda Accord Hybrid may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 300 pounds less than the Toyota Avalon Hybrid.

The Accord Hybrid uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Accord Hybrid a Large car, while the Avalon Hybrid is rated a Mid-size.

The Accord Hybrid has 2.1 inches more front headroom, .2 inches more front legroom, .2 inches more rear headroom and .3 inches more rear hip room than the Avalon Hybrid.

Cargo Capacity

The Accord Hybrid has a larger trunk than the Avalon Hybrid (16.7 vs. 16.1 cubic feet).

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the Accord Hybrid offers cargo security. The Avalon Hybrid’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Accord Hybrid. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics

The Accord Hybrid has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Avalon Hybrid doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Accord Hybrid Touring’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Avalon Hybrid’s intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Consumer Reports rated the Accord Hybrid’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Avalon Hybrid’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

Economic Advantages

The Accord Hybrid will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Accord Hybrid will retain 48.24% to 49.8% of its original price after five years, while the Avalon Hybrid only retains 46.31% to 47.17%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Accord Hybrid will be $4987 to $7137 less than for the Toyota Avalon Hybrid.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Toyota Avalon Hybrid, based on reliability, safety and performance.

The Accord was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 25 of the last 27 years. The Avalon Hybrid has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Honda Accord outsold the Toyota Avalon by almost 10 to one during the 2021 model year.
