Compared to metal, the Palisade’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV80 has a metal gas tank.

Both the Palisade and the GV80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Hyundai Palisade is safer than the Genesis GV80:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard front crash prevention system, and its headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Palisade its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2019, a rating granted to only 114 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The GV80 is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2019.

There are over 2 times as many Hyundai dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Palisade’s warranty.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Palisade has a standard 180-amp alternator. The GV80’s 150-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Palisade’s reliability 35 points higher than the GV80.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai 7th in reliability, above the industry average. With 1 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked 8th.

On the EPA test cycle the Palisade AWD gets better fuel mileage than the GV80 3.5 turbo V6 AWD (19 city/24 hwy vs. 18 city/23 hwy).

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Hyundai Palisade uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GV80 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Palisade stops shorter than the GV80:

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Palisade is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than on the GV80.

For better maneuverability, the Palisade’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the GV80’s (38.7 feet vs. 39.3 feet).

The Hyundai Palisade may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 650 pounds less than the Genesis GV80.

The Palisade has standard seating for 8 passengers; the GV80 can only carry up to 7.

The Palisade has 15.3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the GV80 (155.3 vs. 140).

The Palisade has .5 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front legroom, 1 inch more front shoulder room, 1.7 inches more rear headroom, 3.7 inches more rear legroom, 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room, 3.5 inches more third row headroom, 1.1 inches more third row legroom and 2 inches more third row shoulder room than the GV80.

The Palisade’s cargo area provides more volume than the GV80.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Palisade easier. The Palisade’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 29.6 inches, while the GV80’s liftover is 31.7 inches.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Palisade uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV80 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Consumer Reports rated the Palisade’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the GV80’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Palisade’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the GV80’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

Insurance will cost less for the Palisade owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Palisade will cost $280 to $5715 less than the GV80 over a five-year period.

The Palisade will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Palisade will retain 48.72% to 49.8% of its original price after five years, while the GV80 only retains 44.45% to 45.87%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Hyundai Palisade will be $16141 to $20264 less than for the Genesis GV80.

The Hyundai Palisade outsold the Genesis GV80 by over five to one during the 2021 model year.
