The X5 xDrive45e’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The I-Pace doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW X5 xDrive45e has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The I-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The X5 xDrive45e has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The X5 xDrive45e offers optional Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The I-Pace doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the X5 xDrive45e’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The I-Pace doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the X5 xDrive45e and the I-Pace have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The BMW X5 xDrive45e weighs 888 pounds more than the Jaguar I-Pace. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the X5 xDrive45e the rating of “Top Pick” for 2021, a rating granted to only 145 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The I-Pace has not been tested, yet.

The X5 xDrive45e’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the I-Pace’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are almost 2 times as many BMW dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X5 xDrive45e’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW 10th in reliability, above the industry average. With 78 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

The X5 xDrive45e’s maximum EPA estimated driving range on a full tank of fuel and a full charge is 400.4 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The I-Pace’s range is only 222 miles, after which the minimum recharge time is 15 minutes for only a 28% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge at a conventional charging station can take up to 12 hours and 54 minutes.

For better traction, the X5 xDrive45e has larger standard tires than the I-Pace (265/50R19 vs. 245/50R20). The X5 xDrive45e’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the I-Pace (F:275/40R21 & R:315/35R21 vs. 255/40R22).

The X5 xDrive45e’s optional 315/35R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the I-Pace’s optional 40 series tires.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the X5 xDrive45e can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The I-Pace doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the X5 xDrive45e is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than on the I-Pace.

For greater off-road capability the X5 xDrive45e has a greater minimum ground clearance than the I-Pace (8.3 vs. 7.8 inches), allowing the X5 xDrive45e to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The X5 xDrive45e has .9 inches more front headroom, 2.4 inches more front shoulder room, .6 inches more rear headroom, 2.4 inches more rear legroom and 3.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the I-Pace.

The X5 xDrive45e has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the I-Pace with its rear seat up (33.1 vs. 25.3 cubic feet). The X5 xDrive45e has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the I-Pace with its rear seat folded (71.2 vs. 53.6 cubic feet).

The X5 xDrive45e’s cargo area is larger than the I-Pace’s in almost every dimension:

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the X5 xDrive45e’s second and third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The I-Pace doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

The X5 xDrive45e’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The I-Pace’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The X5 xDrive45e’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the I-Pace’s (7200 vs. 1653 pounds).

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that BMW service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks BMW 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 13% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 18th.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the X5 xDrive45e has a standard rear wiper. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the X5 xDrive45e has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The I-Pace doesn’t offer cornering lights. The X5 xDrive45e also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the X5 xDrive45e to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The I-Pace doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The X5 xDrive45e offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the I-Pace.

The X5 xDrive45e’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The I-Pace’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

The BMW X5 outsold the Jaguar I-Pace by almost 50 to one during the 2021 model year.
