Both the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon and the V60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available lane departure warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain Wagon is safer than the Volvo V60:

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 112 more horsepower (362 vs. 250) and 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 258) than the V60 T5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Mercedes E 450 All-Terrain Wagon is faster than the V60 T5:

Both the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon and the V60 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stop lights and heavy traffic. All E-Class All-Terrain Wagons have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. A disable switch costs extra on the V60.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has 5.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the V60 (21.1 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain Wagon, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the V60.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the V60. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the V60.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The V60 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The V60’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the V60, which uses coil springs in front and transverse leafs springs in the rear. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The V60 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The V60 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s wheelbase is 2.6 inches longer than on the V60 (115.7 inches vs. 113.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than on the V60.

The E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain handles at .89 G’s, while the V60 Momentum pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the V60 Momentum (26.2 seconds @ .69 average G’s vs. 27.1 seconds @ .66 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has a greater minimum ground clearance than the V60 (5.75 vs. 5.4 inches), allowing the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon a Mid-Size Station Wagon car, while the V60 is rated a Small Station Wagon.

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The V60 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The engine in the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the V60. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mercedes service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 6th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 4% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 11th.

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the V60, the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The V60 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The V60 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid. Its optional heated washer nozzles will defrost the washer fluid but not the windshield.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has standard extendable sun visors. The V60 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes E-Class offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The V60 doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The V60 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon’s optional Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The V60’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

The Mercedes E-Class comes in coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Volvo V60 isn’t available as a coupe, convertible or sedan.

Insurance will cost less for the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon with a number “5” insurance rate while the V60 is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon is less expensive to operate than the V60 because it costs $100 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon than the V60, including $39 less for front brake pads and $367 less for a fuel pump.

The E 450/E 53 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2 of the last 4 years. The V60 has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Mercedes E-Class/CLS outsold the Volvo 60 Series by 64% during the 2021 model year.
