For enhanced safety, the front, middle and rear seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Sequoia are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Discovery doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Toyota Sequoia has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Discovery doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Sequoia and the Discovery have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available four-wheel drive.

The Toyota Sequoia weighs 570 to 1120 pounds more than the Land Rover Discovery. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Sequoia 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Discovery. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Discovery ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Sequoia for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Land Rover only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Discovery.

There are almost 7 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Sequoia’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Sequoia’s reliability 56 points higher than the Discovery.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Sequoia first among large suvs in their 2021 Initial Quality Study. The Discovery isn’t in the top three in its category.

Power ranks Toyota 13th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 43 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 26th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2021 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 146 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 33rd.

The Sequoia’s 5.7 DOHC V8 produces 85 more horsepower (381 vs. 296) and 106 lbs.-ft. more torque (401 vs. 295) than the Discovery’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Sequoia’s 5.7 DOHC V8 produces 26 more horsepower (381 vs. 355) and 32 lbs.-ft. more torque (401 vs. 369) than the Discovery P360’s optional 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Discovery requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Sequoia has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Discovery (26.4 vs. 23.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifies the Toyota Sequoia as an “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV). The Land Rover Discovery is only certified to “Low Emissions Vehicle” (LEV) standards.

For better traction, the Sequoia has larger tires than the Discovery (275/65R18 vs. 255/55R20).

The Sequoia has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare costs extra on the Discovery. Without the option you must depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The Sequoia offers an optional automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Discovery doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sequoia’s wheelbase is 6.9 inches longer than on the Discovery (122 inches vs. 115.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Sequoia is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 2.7 inches wider in the rear than on the Discovery.

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the Discovery’s (38.1 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

The Sequoia has standard seating for 8 passengers; the Discovery can only carry 7.

The Sequoia has 3.4 inches more front legroom, 4.7 inches more front hip room, 6 inches more front shoulder room, 3.5 inches more rear legroom, 4.2 inches more rear hip room, 6.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.8 inches more third row legroom, 8.4 inches more third row hip room and 18.5 inches more third row shoulder room than the Discovery.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Sequoia’s middle and third row seats recline. The Discovery’s third row seats don’t recline.

The Sequoia’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Discovery’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The Sequoia’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Discovery’s (7100 vs. 6613 pounds).

The Sequoia offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The Discovery doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Sequoia’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Discovery does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Sequoia has standard extendable sun visors. The Discovery doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Sequoia to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Discovery doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Sequoia Limited/Nightshade offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Discovery doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Sequoia is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Discovery doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
